Best wheelset that can be had for under $500

Need some suggestions on best wheels under $500. Going on a '12 Caad10 105. Bike came stock w/shimano rs-10 wheels. I'm presently 6'2" 200 lbs. Probably be around 190 in about 2 months. Any suggestion on fastest wheels would be appreciated. Thanks.

While I agree those are nice wheels, you may want to call and see what's up. Psimet mentioned in another thread that Velocity has a seemingly endless delay on A23 rims and November may be in the same boat. Fwiw, I got some A23s from prowheelbuilder, and they also build custom wheels for good prices. Boyd's Vitesse sells for a similar price and has a 23mm Kinlin rim. If you can handle black I'd take a look at those.

I like my Vuelta Corsa Superlites. Got them new in the box from a local ebay dealer for $350.

Williams 30x. These have been rock solid for me. I'm 6'1" and 190lbs. They're $559 though.

Unless you go for Dura Ace hubs the OP/Shimano's will be a chunk heavier and have more spokes as I don't think Ultegra hubs are available in low count drillings. Also, low count really works better with deeper, stronger rims. But if these are everyday training wheels, why the need for low count?

I've destroyed multiple open pro wheelsets. Cracks around the eyelets. I much prefer Kinlin rims. I believe certain wheel manufacturers use them (such as Boyd and Rol). Or you can buy the rims, spokes, hubs separately and have someone build them for you. I got some deals and got the parts for ~$200 - $250. A friend built them for me for free, but you could probably have them put together for around $50 - $100. Mine are just under 1400 grams and are the best aluminum clinchers I've ridden.

+1 vote for the Neuvations. My M28's have a bit over 5k miles on them and still have yet to need truing. I am only 5'5"/145 but have raced in them and have taken them off-road on more than 1 occasion (bike handling training). Overall I'm very impressed.

I might do alot more research and take this approach. Lack of knowledge about parts is holding me back. With a wheel truing stand, how hard would they be to build yourself? I like to learn how to do stuff, and money i would save taking to LBS would get a free truing stand.

Thanks for all the great advice. Leaning towards Vitesse, Corsa superlites , soul 3.0 or building a set. Basically i haven't decided anything yet.

If you are just building an occasional set for yourself a truing stand isn't necessary, just use your bike.
