Badmother, while you certainly have a knack for cool ideas, and your ingenuity in carrying them out is even more impressive. Okay, I`ll stop before I embarrass you . Anyway, I love front platforms, and the backstops make platfroms even more useful. Great plan bolting the blocks on to be welded offsite. Good luck with getting the rest of your bikes in compliance with the new standard.

Wanted BiFri to weld the copy of Brompton mounting block on (which is what was done here],.. when I was asking about ordering the bike.

since the single big bag is more handy-useful off the bike,
than the pair of front panniers, though tying the pair into 1,
with a couple webbing strips, did help.

get the work done.. then get the finish powder coat re-applied...

after blasting off finish to apply additions..

Why? You already have the bike, you don`t need BF to do it- she just explained EXACTLY how to do it.
Of course, if you`re too squeemish, you could always send it to Badmother. She fear nowt.

Guess i'm just busy enough to not spend the hours on the Bus to Eugene
and back, for the retrofit and refinish part of the Idea..

So, I use 2 front bags. fit a Front headlamp above them.
filling the space the other rack would go..

Having done it others I think have tried using just one or two jubilee clips. Clearly three was OTT lol

I also use the Klickfix system using one of these

Nice work OP...

I'm hoping to mount a Brompton QR block to my Bike Friday Tikit's custom front PR rack so I can use the Ortlieb bag shown above. I think it will be a great combo providing a waterproof bag that looks nice enough I can take into business meetings and not needing any straps to try and hold it on the rack.



I just need to track down a fabricator to weld a bracket on my rack that the Brompton plastic QR block can be bolted onto. The summer is too nice to spend on this kind of project so I'll give it a shot in the fall.

Seen another setup using Ortlieb's latching pannier hooks on the Bottom,
clipping onto the PR rack platform's tubes..

that means modifying the bag rather than the rack.

KF and Ortlieb also offer rear rack top bags and fittings
that may also make a bottom catch QR mounting scheme..

Brompton-Ortlieb O bag is pretty much the Downtown bag with a different clip,
and 2 of their small add-on pockets

and a 100% upcharge .. over $300 down here..

+1 - Modifying the bag is more of a PITA than changing the rack and a slick bag is important because that's the part that has to get hauled around. Last thing I want to do is hack the bag.

Should a Gotten a Brompton.. thing is adding it to a rack attached to the fork, is
you have to swing the load in bag with the wheel, and it sits a lot higher .

a Head tube mount to the frame , the bag stays steady , wheel swings underneath it.

So my Bene Sugg ,is get the frame modification to suit the bag clip mount...

The Porteur rack thing is kind of cool.. it should swing under the bag well enough..

I got an older all steel Brompton bag support , like BM shows, above.
[as well as the new lighter nylon/aluminum one, inc with bag]

might see if it can be modified to make a bigger bottom platform..

I tried and didn't like the Brompton. In fact I was offered one at cost by a dealer and decided to pay full retail for my Tikit instead. I prefer the fit, the ride and the fold over the Brompton. I'm not going to buy a bike I don't like because I can use a bag I think is cool.

Attaching the bag to the PR rack puts it lower than mounting it to the headtube. Considering the loads I have hauled on the PR rack so far I have no worries it will handle poorly with the bag attached.

Here is my install. Had local bike shop ezgreen bike dana point machine the threads for my on the downtube nova head set. Holds at least 20 pounds securely. Best mod i did.

That's an interesting twist, thanks for posting.

The potential problem I see is that the Dahon bracket is just bolted to the Brompton lug and not supported i.e. the bolts are taking all the load. The shearing forces with a lot of weight may break the bolts.

As I am sure you realise, the Brompton block has a recess that fits snugly over the welded lug which provides support with the downward shearing force so it is not taken by the bolts which just keep it secured flush to the lug.

PS hmm looking at the later pictures I am not sure what he/she is doing with the DIY resin block ? It still looks like all the downward shearing forces are on the bolts ?

Aaaargh! That all steel frame is EXACTLY what I need to mount my Arkel shoppers! Or something like it, probably about an inch taller. The new ones are not quite tall enough and the plastic in the center is just a bit too wide for the hooks on the shoppers. I did a google search and did not find any source for old frames. Not really worth the effort to have one fabricated, since the t bag accomplishes the same thing for us.

Honestly, mounting the Arkel Shoppers to the Brompton(s) is a solution without a problem. The t bag already does everything that I need. If I absolutely HAD to carry more, I have THREE Timbuk2 bags and a SealLine backpack. I have had one situation in the past year and a half where I needed to move a bunch of stuff quickly and using the Arkels was one solution, but not my only solution. ZipCar, Car2Go, and my brother-in-law are also viable resources. I am likely to expend a great deal of energy and/or money coming up with a frame for the Arkel -- only to NEVER actually use it because I have my t bag with me and it will hold that bag of apples and half gallon of almondmilk. The Arkel Shoppers don't hold more than the t bag -- they hold less.

What I actually need to do is post the Arkels on CL. Someone can use them. They were a gift and they served well. I could keep them and hang them off the Retrovelo, but that bike has a sturdy frame-mounted front rack. I can put a couple of bags of groceries on that rack. I don't even have a rack on Penelope and that bike may stay a "backpack only" bike. Let's say I go ahead and mount one of my racks on it. I'll NEVER ride the damn thing to the grocery store because it's two blocks away and I can walk there with my rolley cart. It's not worth the effort to drag the bike downstairs, ride it, lock it, etc.

I'm better off that the Arkels don't fit. I don't need them and now I have no good reason to keep them.

The bag is not bad for the money and mine came with a elastic rain cover. The fitting works well though I still dislike adding all the weight to the steering when the bag is full preferring a frame mounting system like Brompton/Dahon use. The bag also sits slightly back at an angle rather than vertical like the Brompton one, a function of the mounting block. As you say the bag is a good size but again I think the Brompton open bag still wins certainly in terms of carrying it off the bike when full. The Brompton one also seems to carry a little bit more shopping, though they have the same volume specs so again it might be the shape that makes it better for packing more compactly.
