I hope not. Tomorrow, if all goes well, a good friend and I will be trying to get him back on the bike after about 1.5 years of a couple of very difficult back surgeries, and a lot of unavoidable deconditioning.

Actually I consider the number 13 quite lucky!
Living in Europe during World War II in Belgium, our house number was 13.
Lucky . . . our house was never bombed unlike other places around us.
Well, we didn't count schrapnell hitting the place, but we were never flattened.
Oh, and my last name has 13 letters . . .

Where in Holland did you live? An uncle was shot down over Holland and the Dutch underground hid him with a Dutch family for over a year before a collaborationist turned them in. He spent the rest of the war in an officer's P.O.W. camp. The Dutch hold a special place in our families hearts for hiding and protecting him. The things your family faced with the Nazis makes me shiver.

After two back surgeries, I find the forward leaning position on my roadbike very comfortable. It's standing for any period that is uncomfortable for me. Perhaps I should regress to walking on all fours like a chimp - a much more natural position for us humanoids.
I'm staying off my bike today. After a nasty fall a couple of weeks ago, I'm not trusting Friday the 13th.

Things just went GREAT - outstanding.

We were able to mount the bike, get started and stopped (several times) and did about 1.5 miles. My friend was ecstatic (as am I), as he was overcoming some tremendous odds against his doing this.

Had German soldiers quartered in our house several times. In between we hid out 2 jews on separate occcasions.
Had a radio concealed in an old sewing machine cabinet to listen to the BBC; punsihable by death if they found the radio. In those days radios were a bit bulky and needed an aerial for reception, so we used to unspool a piece of wire when we had it turned on.
Somehow we got through 4 years of war/occupation/bombings/starvation.
In a way it was easier being a kid than an adult as we were much more adaptable to situations and were not suspect.
So house number 13 was lucky for us.
Superstitious? Maybe!

Regardless of which occupied country you lived in Rudy, you deserve any accolades that come your way. Harboring the two Jewish persons was bravery in its purest form. We don't know how easy and good we have life here and now. You treasured a simple radio that could have seen you executed just for owning it. We think that it is terrible if the AC is out for a few minutes. You have my admiration, sir.

I don't particularly put any significance in the superstition but it is always interesting to see what people make of the day. Some good fun celebrations of the day out there. I am also a fan of the old Eddie Lawrence comedic rap: "Is that what's troubling you Bunkie?" He did some fun stuff.
