R'off used a standard 4 bolt chainring , where the Disc Mount is..
same as MTB crank, bolt pattern.
So, second function, hub flipped over.. can be a last resort fixed gear..

Good luck finding them in most of the United States as well. Sure, you can always order everything by UPS. Still, it's a lot simpler to just go with gear that is unlikely to break down in the first place and then to take care of your gear so it doesn't get damaged. What if you break a leg or lose your eyesight? Can UPS ship new legs or new eyes? My philosophy is to do everything possible to ensure there will be no problems on tour, but also have a bailout plan to end the tour early if things do go wrong. I once ended a tour because my mirror broke, and riding on highways without a mirror is a no-no to me because of the risk to my body, which is irreplaceable. Now I carry a spare mirror. Likelihood of breaking two mirrors is probably greater than likelihood of breaking the Rohloff hub.

Lots of touring cyclists have done some very big rides on derailleurs without issue so it is not like they are going to self destruct the second you put a touring load on them.
If you will remember I have never said a Rohloff is a bad idea, just that it is not ideal for everyone.

before my R'off bike I got decades of use out of a 6 speed freewheel and triple crank drive train .
Phil wood f/w rear hub ..
something to be said for simple robust components that already have proven themselves..

That has to be the slackest reason for leaving a rtour I have ever heard. Do you drive. I have been driving 35 years and have never even come close to nailing a 200 pound object on the hwy? I have to say p2eople texting while driving are a worry, and thT needs to change, or is a game changer.

I bought a Roloff, and wish I had bought a phil freewheel hub. Roloof is odd combo of over and under kill, heavy, ugly. It is basicaly a mud hub, otherwise not so superior.

It's more than I need for my current commute too ,
[Mostly because I've moved into the old part of town , so shrunk my commutes]
But I like the sequential shifting,
now that I have been using the IGH a few years..
Fair weather and high summer day long Touring was a different situation..

Roloff hubs are gorgeous on the inside and outside. The engineering and manufacture/assembly is excellent. They do seem to take a simple task and complicate it, though. Still, I'd like to have one just to look at! They are gorgeous!

Not that nice on the outside. The inside seems to be their thing. And not touring oriented. If the Phil ever comes out, I will be tempted to upgrade my hub:

Did anybody notice that this thread was dormant for about a year until yesterday?

They do seem to take a simple task and complicate it, though.
then one additional stage, a Low range .. about a 150% reduction gear
I, also, have a Schlumpf Mountain Drive 2 speed crank-set. (its on my Brompton)
in low range on the crank I have gear 1,2,3.
shifting to high range I shift the hub back to low, thats 4th, then upshift to 5 and 6..
Rohloff does that highest of the low to lowest of the high, between 7th, and 8th.
BTW, as a get on it and ride Commuter , I like Black anodized.
but my 1st hub was a polished 32 hole , managed to get the big sticker off ,
they can be also kept as polished as the owner wished to do .
( Havent rebuilt into a wheel, if any one wants one..)
recently a 36 hole hubshell was introduced by R'off..
Phil has made their own hubshell featuring, wide diameter flanges
in more than those 2 drillings.
quoting:
- 141mm Spoke Hole Diameter ( larger.. vs 100 )
- 25.5mm Center to Flange (narrower vs 60)
- Various Spoke Counts Available: 24,28,32,36,40 and 48
- Release Date: TBA
...so the picture is still a prototype.
Might be better in a folder with a low spoke 28t in a Brompton 349 rim
bracing angle a bit reduced, by the narrow flanges..

My touring bikes are standardized around silver finish, with some high polish which is so low maintenance. LOL. I'm not sure how that happened, just an accumulation of certain parts at the outset... I know the polish got started when they freely substituted the polished Paul cantis. It is a lot easier to find black parts these days.
