Was wondering if anyone might know about dirt drop handlebar availability.

Have just tried out the Nitto dirt drop rm014, and definetly like the width ~50cm and flare angle
but feel like I want something with less drop -as it is the vertical difference between hoods and drops seems a little too much to make both work well


The Soma Junebug def has less drop, but feels too wide
I hear the midge and woodchipper are also wider still, so no go

Know of a dirt drop thats narrow-ish like the nitto, but more compact/less drop?

anyone have a in person comparision of the origin8 Gary2 with the Nitto rm14? on paper the specs sound like it may be close.... but thats just numbers

Sorry for the sidetrack, but what are you doing for shifters and brake levers on these dirt dropbars?

Bar end shifters. Isn't that what everyone does for dirt drops?

and whatever road brake lever I have laying around, RX100s at the moment.

I was curious because my CX bike has ultegra brifters and I'm not that happy with the lever travel controlling Avid BB7s. I hear they are coming out with redesigned BB7s made just for this purpose, with a different leverage ratio.

I use regular drop bars on that bike-- FSA Omega Compact. I only rode them briefly, but I got a strong 'single position' vibe from Salsa Woodchippers. Kind of defeats the purpose of drop bars if you only have one hand position...

I have a 2012 Salsa Fargo with Woodchipper 2s. I also have Sram Apex with BB7s. It is the bomb. I usually can't ride drops, but the WC 2s are great!

anyhow, other small people may be interested, I've found:

Soma Portola bars, theyre nearly identical shape to the Soma Junebug (which is Midge-like); however they come in 53cm instead of junebug's 56cm width.

Nitto Dirt Drop, comes in 50cm width, but have a ton of drop and almost looks more like a rando bar than a dirt drop


currently trying out the Portola, a few cm wider than ideal, but between being slightly wide and having too much drop (nitto) its probably a better option

Dirt drops - - now that's an oxymoron.

When you mean wide are you refering to c-c width, or actual barend to end width?

Not going to find a narrow end to end dirtdrop. The one one midge is the narrowest I know of at 53cm end to end. Woodchippers are either 42 or 46 c-c, but 60cm end to end. Ragley luxy bars are about 65wide with a 42 wide top. But it you want narrow look for compact drops with flair like the salsa cowbells. I have them on my cx bike.

Not sure why you want dirtdrops if you want to ride the hoods, dirt drops are designed so you ride in the drops all the time.

I ride in the drops on technical stuff, the tops on rolling sinlgetrack, and the ends, drops and hoods for climbing. 4 positions available.

This is true, drop section shall be the place used. However, with bars that have a lot of drop, it is difficult to get the drop position high enough without violating the bars below saddle rule.

I go with the "bars wherever the hell I want them" rule.

My bars are below the saddle. There is no problem with weight distribution as long as you have a proper fit.

Wide shallow , flip a Nitto Albatross, cr-mo, accepts bar ends. On one rat-bike, I flipped a Nitto Dove, looks track racer 1890's
