I rode with this group in 2009 and can say they definitely take care of the riders without being intrusive. It's a good way to tour if you don't want to go alone or can't find a couple of friends to go along.

Three of us are doing DC to Pittsburgh in July because none of us like large groups to ride with.

I was wondering what type of bike would work best for this ride. Is it a 700x23 road bike, cyclocross, FX, or DS series?

Are there planned rest stops with snacks? what about toilets along the trail?

You would be riding between 30 and 45 miles on a trail with a ruling gradient of less than 2%. How many rest stops do you need? If you look up the GAP's official site you will find a map showing the locations of facilities:

https://gaptrail.org/tmi/maps.cfm

Click on each section to see the location of bathrooms, stores, etc.

I doubt they will truck porta-potties to strategic locations on each day's route. The GAP is very user-friendly, with ample services available in most places.
