Really, the amount of death and injury is entirely beside the point for this, though I might point out that the laws are to keep the bicyclists from killing THEMSELVES as much as anything else.
[troll]From the number of "why should the rules apply to me" style responses I've read here, it's no wonder motorists hate cyclists so much! [/troll] (we need an emoticon for pouring gasoline on flames)
Even some laws for suburban tanks (SUVs) seem silly, but I think one should follow them even if you don't like it, or see the reason for it. I stop at the stop signs even if nobody is there, though I'll only make a theatrical foot planting at an intersection if other vehicles are there, so they can figure out exactly when I've "stopped", and know who has the right of way...

I always try to please nobody when I can...
It used to happen more when I first moved here but, still, every now and then when I blow through a stop sign a motorist will have a hissy fit with the horn. Never cross traffic, because I never blow a stop sign if there is cross traffic. A couple of days ago I blew through a stop sign as a car was pulling up to it. He blew his horn at me and I kept going. He kept blowing warning me not to go through the next light. I did and he got so enraged that he blew through it too to come and give me a large piece of his mind. Out of nowhere comes this police cruiser and I think I am going to really make this guys day when he sees me get written up. Nope. HE got pulled over as I cruised away feeling no joy at this turn of events. I've been on the tandem with my SO and we blast through a stoplight that I know has no cross traffic. When parallel traffic does catch up to us there is a police cruiser in the herd... ... and they go right past me. When and if, bicycles... even tandems, start racking up the kind of death and injury tolls that cars of all sizes are responsible for, you may see more crackdown on red light running by cyclists. There is a HUGE difference between slowing at an intersection and cruising through if there is no cross traffic and blasting through one, being missed by inches by another vehicle that had the right of way. You might be morally superior to me if you have never run a red light but... I'm home long before you are. That's a benefit I can actually measure. FWIW.
That's only a threat if you have something to lose.....
The local cops just did a drunk checkpoint 2 weeks ago.....Out of 1100 drivers stopped,700 of them were not suppose to be driving.....and 17 were drunk.
Welcome to California,we have the finest road system in the U.S......filled with the most unqualified drivers in the world.

Everything should be as simple as possible...But not more so.---Albert Einstein
I never blow through red lights, ever. I at least slow or stop to check for no traffic. I only blow through stop signs if there is NO ONE around.
