It's been a few years since I last did this ride and I'm planning to give it another try this year. I'll go for the 60-miler, but I might chicken out on the 50-miler if I hurt too much. Anybody of you SD yuppies game? They've got beer garden, and if the beer is from the local Alpine Brewery, that's enough of an incentive for me.

Sounds fun, but I'm busy that morning. Plus, I think I've outgrown this sort of thing. If it was a week earlier, I'd probably run into it, as a large portion of the 100 mile route overlaps the 600k I'll be riding. Maybe we can make it a forum ride sometime?

600 k in one day??!! Sure as heck you've outgrown this sort of things. In a good month I do 600 k.
We definitely must do a BF ride in your area but I don't think this route is suitable. One, Alpine is too far for the LA and IE yuppies (as Lesper mentioned), and two, this is a hard route in the middle of nowhere. You get your money worth on this ride just because of the SAG stops. Well, not you as in Robertkat (you probably can zoom through the 60-miler in less than 3 hours on 2 bottles of water and a pack of GU) but slow pokes like me that won't be able to carry all the food and water necessary to finish that ride. I reckon we do a BF ride on the route that you suggested a few years back around Carlsbad. Anyway, don't let me hijack the thread. Good luck on your 600 k.

Same weekend as the Devil Mountain Double . . . which I might actually do this year.

The Devil Mountain Double is epic. Lot of great climbs, great descents, and GREAT support from the Quackers.

I'm thinking that I should be out there this year too.

I suckered a couple of my riding buddies to do it as training for the BA. I think they are nutz to do such a hard ride the week before. By the way, what's up with the BA? It used to sell out in a few days, this year I see the registration is still open. Are they running out of masochists?

They have old registration and 4-pass finisher numbers, here's the way it went recently:

2008: 570 registered riders, 427 finishers
2009: 654 registered riders, 458 finishers
2010: 555 finishers
2011: 522 finishers
2012: 821 registered riders, 546 finishers

As of one week ago, they had 682 registered riders for 2013, and I'd expect a bunch of people registering in the next few days, now that they are done with Mulholland.

Thanks for the insider's info, hamster! I was just joking. I know our masochistic brotherhood is alive and well. I was just curious if the BA has somehow lost its appeal. I personally never liked this ride (starting with the name).

I was supposed to ride the same distance, but a century rider - who knew I was riding the metric! - said, no, this is the way. I ended up riding up Harbison Canyon, adding nearly 5 uphill miles.

I inhaled that overcooked pasta and cheeseburger after, and handed my beer garden ticket to a stranger. Beautiful day for a bike ride.

Friend and I were mountain biking Mt Laguna Saturday and saw the Alpine Riders. I was struck at the fact it seemed the riders were out on their own - no signs, no sag vehicle nothing. Obviously a hardy bunch. Also it was warm Saturday. My hats off to anyone doing the century.

Hey Gallo, we must have been moving at about the same pace. I took 4:40 (started at 7:25 and finished at 12:05). About 4:16 on the bike. I found the new course a bit easier than the old one, but still, it's a great ride.

I don't know about the century, but the 60-miler was very well suported. There was plenty of food and water, the turns were well marked with big orange signs so even a blind guy can see them.
The pasta at the end was really good, the beer even better (I know CalamariChris will disagree, but tough...)

I did the 60. This was the first time I have ridden since the course change. Starting at 6:30am was great.

As always, well marked and supported. I had to skip the post-ride festivities for previously scheduled beer consumption elsewhere.

I left about the same time was wearing my stars and stripes jersey on a white Wilier with white side wall tires. Must have seen you or just missed

I did this ride maybe 5 years ago and somewhere near the start there was about 60 of us bombing down a hill when someone called out a turn to the left. There was confusion as some thought straight was the way and others saw a course arrow for a turn. As those around me made the left the safest thing to do was follow. The group split and some of us went to the left and up the hill a bit only to discover the "course arrow" was actually leading us to a local yard sale. It was pretty funny and still one of my favorite cycling stories.
