How Important is Chainring-to-Crankset Interface?

So I ordered a 5-bolt, 130BCD Gates carbon belt drive sprocket to mount on a spare 7800 crankset. The bolts line up perfectly, but the chainring-to-crankset mating point does not and there is about a 1mm gap.
I'm also going to have to use some washers on the chainring bolts to get the belt to line up properly. Am I asking for trouble?
Will there be creaking?
Is there some way to shim the gap between chainring and crankset?
Is this project a failure?
I'm going to ditch the soft aluminium Dura Ace chainring bolts in favor of some stouter steel ones.

I don't foresee any trouble as long as the bolts end up tight -- a handful of my bikes use 0.5mm (or so) chainring spacers.

I've never has a problem with chainring spacers.

Good move. If you use the kind with the slotted nuts the Shimano TL-FC21 or similar tool is cheap and handy to hold the nuts from spinning when tightening or removing them.

Huzzah! Turns out the spacers were not needed. This probably won't come up that often, but if anyone out there in Internet land ever wants to install a Dura Ace 7800 (or other Hollowtech II) crankset, or installing a Phil Woods outboard bottom bracket on an eccentric bottom bracket shell, on a Globe Live 3 with a Gates carbon drive system, tell 'em yes, and it is a substantial improvement over the stock/OEM crank, which is too wide IMO!
