Shimano 9000 11spd hub lie? Works fine on my old 9spd Mavic Ksyrium SSL hub
I've read everywhere that you cannot mount a Shimano 11spd cassette on a 9/10spd freehub.
Just out of curiousity I took the 9000 Dura-Ace cassette from my new C24 wheels and mounted it on an old (circa 2005) Mavic Ksyrium SSL 9spd hub. No problem. The lock ring had plenty of threads to catch, in fact the last cog provided the same reveal amount for the freehub and axle nut as on the C24s which have the "true" 11spd hub.
My rough measurement of the Mavic freehub length is ~33.4mm, whereas the 9000 freehub is something like 36.7mm. Is there something weird with the Mavic freehub that lets the 9000 11spd cassette sit further inboard than maybe other freehubs do? The resulting cassette placement appears to be perfect. I didn't even need to re-adjust the 9000 derailleur.
What am I missing here?

It's hard to tell from the photos but the largest cog looks awfully close to the spokes. Can you shift into it with out interference?

Yes, there is a little over 2.5mm space between the closest point of the derailleur (the upper jockey wheel nut/buldge) and spokes. The lower cage area has a lot more clearance. Plus, I ensured the derailleur inner limit stop is being hit, so no danger of overshifting into the spokes.

I have two mavic wheelsets with the FTS-L freehubs. My hunch (all it is) is that you do not have the Mavic spacer in there. To use a 10-Speed Shimano cassette, I have to put on the Mavic spacer, a Shimano spacer, then the cassette. I am thinking the eleventh cog is taking up the space meant for the Mavic spacer. No?

This could be a huge boon to Mavic wheel owners... no need to upgrade wheels just to use 11spd.

Most Mavic freehub bodies require an extra spacer to fit a normal 8/9/10 speed Shimano cassette. Thus, a wider 11-speed will fit without that extra spacer.

Oh happy day... don't need to abuse the lightweight C24s over bad condition roads. Just ordered another cassette from the Nashbar sale
