Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Continental 4000S Tires under $80/pair in US

Is this an appropriate post? Apologies if not.

Bike Forums convinced me that there are only two tire choices - Conti 4000s and lesser tires. I had a horrible first few months cycling. LOTS of miles. LOTS of flats - several times I had multiple flats on one ride. Finally (I can be dumb as a stump) I figured out that I should try new tires. What choice did I have but 4000S after reading the forums here, but WOW are they expensive! And WOW did they work! I ceased having flats. And they seemed to work better, but I may not have sufficient experience to be a good judge.

Planet Cyclery is selling pairs of them, both 23 and 25, for $80 with free shipping. A pair of Conti Presta tubes for $10. Both of those are the best prices I've found.

Is this a good company? I hope so - I ordered a pair of both.

I hope this proves helpful.

That is a good price and shipping should be quicker (and without fear of getting hit for customs), but I haven't heard of them or ordered from them. Since they don't have an address listed in their "about us" or "contact us" section, i'd be wary.

Great prices, but they're a pain in the rear to deal with when it comes to warranties.

Apr 3 - bought and paid $153.95

Item # XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Paypal Transaction # #XXXXXXXXXXXX

June 21 - sent an email with large pictures about the crack on the right pedal

June 23 - finally replied, instructed me to send the pedals back

Planet Cyclery
PO BOX 516
Broomfield, CO 80038

July 9 - sent the pedals

Tracking Number: CXXXXXXXXXXXX

Canadapost.ca to track

July 17th - you received the pedals

September 26- I asked for a follow up

September 27 - You guys replied and I replied within a MINUTE. You guys asked for the shipping address and here it is:

XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

September 28 - Asked YET AGAIN if it was shipped. You guys have gone AWOL since then.
I had a claim with them and it look them almost a year (resolved November 2012). It was impossible for them to miss my emails .

I'll just get them @ PBK.

If you live in the US much quicker shipping. My last PBK order took 3 weeks but I realize not everybody has to wait that long.

If you're looking for flat resistance, GP4000S aren't really the way to go. They ride nicely, have good traction and aren't terribly expensive (particularly from pbk!)

I'd suggest waiting for PBK's next sale and stocking up on spares. You are going to cut them (eventually) and you'll be happier if you just consider them expendable. $80 for 25mm really isn't bad at all though. I'd call it good.

I ordered some look pedals very recently from them.... were at my door in 3 days time across the country. No issues here, though I have read that if you have problems, that's where they fall down on the job. But, I'd use them again, they earned a repeat from me when I need something else.

They also run an ebay store. They are a great option for me as it's a five minute drive (or a ten minute ride) for me to just pick up stuff I get from them.

Another vote for PBK. Conti's go on sale there multiple times during the year. I stock up on a few and store them until needed.

I had a great experience with Wiggle.com on their deal of TWO GP4000S tires and FIVE Continental tubes. Delivered within a week to my home in the states. https://www.wiggle.com/continental-gr...-tubes-bundle/ Use a new email address to sign up for their newsletter and they immediately send you a coupon for $8 off. I just did it and the total comes to $78.18 shipped. I would say that is still a great deal considering you get 5 tubes as well.

You may be in the minority, but I agree with you on Conti being overrated.

They're $65 a tire at the LBS in Snohomish, and $75 a tire at most shops in town.

EDIT: I need to read more closely. The thread says under $80 a pair, not per tire. Less than $40 per tire is actually a pretty good deal, almost as good as UK stores, but without the wait.

I have a set of Conti 4000s on one of my bikes at the moment. Don't get me wrong, the tyre isn't BAD, but it's nothing special either. It's a good tire, comparable with Michelin but I think the Michelins have better grip and handling overall. I won't comment on Rolling Resistance cause thats far too questionable

Michelin re-did the Pro series with the 4. They have once again gained the upper hand in the tire wars. No brainer but I still stock a ton of Conti 4000s and people ask for them by name.

As for the $80/set....that's damned close to lowest wholesale pricing in the US - and I usually get OEM pricing. I can assure you they are stapling an imaginary $2 bill to each one of those they ship out once their costs truly pan out.

Yes, I sell a lot of tires, but it's to customers and sponsored teams. For Joe public I highly recommend that they source from the UK. No one can price control the UK like they can in the US and as a result you get real market pricing based on the fact that they are truly commodities. Not artificially inflated pricing from domestic MAP policies.

I think I want to switch back to Michelin when my current stock of GP4000S runs out - I really liked the service course Pro3 but I always threw them out before they wore out on account of damage. The GP haven't been much better. I just haven't figure out how their new model lineup compares to the OLD model line up... which one is most like the old Pro2.
