So I just registered for the Great Alaska Double Century which is one of the distances as part of the Fireweed 400.
I've done a couple of centuries each year for the past 5 or 6 years, but longest single day ride is about 108. At least I have 5 1/2 months to train!
Last September I went on my first trip to Alaska and rode in the Anchorage Bike MS which was an incredible experience. Especially riding along Turnagain Arm south of Anchorage and seeing beluga whales swimming just off shore. Folks I met during that ride invited me back up this coming summer. So I have people up there to ride with and who will handle a lot of the logistics (support vehicle, places to stay). Yes, I will be buying them lots of beer to thank them. It also turns out that the owners of a local bike shop are from Alaska and are planning a trip up to do the Fireweed; as of now there are about 8 people going not including me. So I will also have people at home to go on long training rides as well as more people to drink beer with in Alaska.
So, to say the least, I am really excited!
