I need your help. I was hit by a car on Thanksgiving weekend and dislocated my shoulder. I have still not recovered. The car drivers insurance company is having a hard time believing this. Everyone I've talked to that has had this kind of injury says it took months and some said it took a year.
I want to know your what your experience is. Also, what kind of medical assistance did you get?
Chiropractor? Physical therapist? How many times a week.
Surgery? Medication?
Any other information that would be helpful.
Thanks for your help.
A dislocated shoulder takes significant time to heal. First, do nothing except hold in place for 6 weeks if I remember, then it is like 3 months of therapy to bring back full motion.
The insurance company is just trying to stop payment. They are not concerned with you one iota.
I fell off my horse over 6 months ago and landed on my hip and shoulder. I did not dislocate my shoulder or even tear anything that I could tell. My shoulder is still stiff and sore today. I can't imagine how painful a dislocated shoulder would be after 6 months. Don't let them bully you.
I had a wrestling injury. My practice partner had an illegal arm bar and kept lifting it. My shoulder dislocated and torn a muscle in my shoulder. I have very "loose" joint and luckily it when back into place. It was extremely painful the first week. The second and third week it would easily redislocate if any pressure was applied. Now I have full range of motion but it still is easily agitated. I think all be back to normal in 2 or 3 weeks.

Shoulder injuries never really heal. You just take Advil when they hurt for the rest of your life. Of course this is in large part because whenever you crash doing ANYTHING you tend to land on the SAME SHOULDER. Never fails.

Hard time believing? Too bad for them. You settle when you are ready to settle not when they want to. If memory serves you have 5 years. You'll want to consult your own legal resources for confirmation on your rights here in CA. As far as the injury this is probably not the best source for medical info. I believe there are a whole lot of different ways you can mess up your shoulder. What is your doctor telling you? Who is paying your meds right now? In the absence of PIP coverage the other party's ins co isn't going to pay anything beyond property damage until you are ready to settle. This is standard.
The insurance company just wants to stop payment on you. Dont let them try to rush you into anything. I dislocated both of my shoulder, at seperate times from motox racing accidents. The first time it hurt for some time since i tore my rotator tissue in my shoulder (had to get an MRI to tell me that). After about 4 weeks I could use my shoulder just fine, but it hurt when i lifted my arm above my head. It took another 4 weeks to completely heal. The second time a guy i was riding with put it in place for me and I took some lortab that i had left over from a previous accident for about 2 weeks then it took about a month after that to feel normal. I dont know what kind of medical care you got in the first place, but i would go see another doctor and tell him your symptoms. You might have torn a ligament or some tissue.
I fractured my right shoulder last May 22nd and still have some restriction of movement and pain. Also I haven't regained full strength yet either, I expect some residual pain for at least a year or more. I have been told I will always have problems.
Don't be bullied by the insurance company. Don't settle until you are healed.
About 10 years ago, I had a weird fracture in my shoulder socket. It was some period of time - if memory serves - something like 6 or 8 weeks before it diagnosed properly. It was a handful of specialists and a another of couple of months later before I convinced one of those specialists that my shoulder was not healing properly. Ended up with surgery and a good year of recovery before it was mostly normal again. Probably another 3 years or so before I stopped having occassional painful days.
I can't remember the last time it ached so I'd say there is hope that it will not be a lifelong hassle for you.

I didn't even fracture my shoulder...just hurt it lifting. And I had 3 years of pain even though I babied it all the time. Finally, after getting 2 cortizone shots that did nothing, a 3rd one did the trick. Pain gone. But, it's still not back to par as far as performance goes, and I can't throw a baseball or football nearly as far as before.
Also, the older you are, the longer it seems to take things to heal.

When I dislocated my shoulder while skiing on the 1st day of the season, 10/22/93. It took about 6 weeks to heal to the point that I could ski again, but the pain lasted much longer. It screwed up my whole ski season, and my technique. Pole plants hurt for the next 5 months. By the time ski season rolled around the next year, I was fine and it hasn't bothered me since.
The length of healing time for shoulder injuries vary from person to person. I think the shape you were in prior to the injury is an important factor in healing time after the accident. Also, the severity of the injury dictates healing time. I broke my shoulder blade and rotator cuff a little over 2 years ago and it took about 3 months for the intense pain to subside, and a good year for it to completley heal to the point where I could through a football. Your probably never going to feel 100% with that shoulder again but don't let it get you down and don't rush the healing process.
Listen to your body, not the insurance company.
