Interesting read but not suprising at what happend. I get a few of those a-holes once in awhile too who want to "scare you" by veering to the shoulder or speeding by very quickly (on a two lane road where the other lane is completely free). I don't think there is a strong enough message from law enforcement that cyclists have equal rights on the road.

Glad the guy is getting charged but I wish incidents like this never happend all together.

    Keep us updated.

Maybe someone can post a picture of the offenders mugshot? I'd like to see if he looks as vapid/frustrated/clueless as he behaves.

This turd reminds me of the countless wife batterers we talked with in social services where the theme was always similar to "..if she didn't irritate me so much, I wouldn't have hit her".

    Wierd...check this out:

and then one of me and aham23 at the 2006 North Shore Century:

Looks like the same road. To make it even more strange when that picture was taken it was my first ride after a good friend and accomplished cyclist had been struck and killed while riding. So...at the moment that picture was taken I was thinking about my firend and hoping I wasn't going to get hit.

This sounds a lot like an incident that happened on a ride I was on about 10 years ago. I small white pickup passed our long, single-file pace line, pulled in front and slammed on the brakes. First 2 riders went right and crashed in the ditch, #3 hit the rear of the truck, endoed and ended up in the bed of the truck, legs hanging out over the tailgate. Had it been a big truck he would have face-planted into the top of the tailgate. There was a pileup of a bunch of riders behind #3. The driver took off while the rider was trying to extricate himself and the rider took a bad spill on the road as a result. In all the confusion no one up front was able to get a tag number and the driver was never caught. Good thing for him as he would have likely been lynched.

I cycle in the North Shore area a lot, and although I've never rode this particular stretch of road, I have encountered... several times... people yelling at and or being aggressive towards cyclists. Too bad this one ended with riders hitting the pavement, but at least no one was seriously injured and the driver was indeed taught a lesson.

I've had cigarette butts flipped out windows at me, drivers towing boats not moving over an inch to pass, people yelling at me to "use the damn sidewalk", etc. Just the other day, a couple of teenage girls driving on Tower Road in Winnetka thought it would be funny to scream at me as they passed. I guess they didn't think it was quite as funny when I caught up to them at the next intersection...

Just because it's a wealthy area doesn't mean that there aren't plenty of idiots up there.

Nobody driver is going to hit you on purpose. From the rear you are so large that they don't want to do thousands of dollars of damage to their vehicle...and from the front you look like you already have been it, so everyone keeps their distance so they don't get blamed!

West of DC, where I often ride, the drivers near Middleburg in Loudon County (mostly mansions and horse estates) are often rude and impatient, honking, shouting and even buzzing the bikes on "their"" roads. As soon as I cross into Faquier County (mostly small family farms) the drivers are much more patient and relaxed more willing to share the road.

OMG I love riding on Saint Mary's Rd. Scary that an [expletive voluntarily omitted] would try to mow down cyclists there. I hope he gets a good long sentence and a felony rap.

I am getting quite tired of reading stories such as this...will it ever end? Props to the OP for getting the shots and to his club for their judicious use of a camera phone. Glad everyone will heal.

Seems this time of year the motorist shenanigans ramp up as they invoke the law of physics. My neck of the woods is usually better than most for this, but the last few weeks have taken a decidedly ugly turn. Sadly, even when caught, the charges rarely amount to much. I bet this guy gets a misdemeanor and probation at best.

    Sadly, it's doubtful that'll happen.

Fairness would be having this fellow lose his license for two years. Nothing is more damaging to a bubba's self-esteem than the loss of their drivers license. The civil lawsuit(s) would be the icing on the cake.

Realistically, what is the best case and worst case scenarios for the punishment this idiot will get? I don't know much at all about the American legal system but I would hope he would see some jail time for what he did.

In general, punishment doled out to motorists who endanger and/or harm cyclists in the USA is surprisingly light. After you read the countless USA news reports over the years with lenient fines doled out to ticketed motorists you get very jaded about issues of fairness and the punishment fitting the infraction of the law.

The above does not apply to victimized politicians/judges/corporate heads/celebrities and their family members though.

Yes, and when complaining that he needs to drive to get to work the judge can suggest he get a bicycle.
