The point of the chamois in bike shorts is to eliminate seams where the body parts contact the seat. Introduce underwear and that sort of defeats the purpose.

The chamois (padding) is supposed to be next to the skin.

Because we're all a little kinky.
Seriously, the idea behind cycling shorts is to give a flat, seam and fold free fit between the rider and the saddle. Wearing skivvies mitigates this. Of course some people are into pain, so it's the idividuals call.

You can still wear them, just put them on the outside. Or, if you really want, wear underwear regardless of what we all say and learn the hard way.

May I call you "Fool" for short?
The reason you aren't supposed to wear undies under your cycling shorts is because I said so.
That should be good enough for you, but just in case it isn't, I can offer a couple more reasons:
1. Wearing underwear under your bike shorts will cause you to have bleeding, pus-filled, infected saddle sores. Bleeding pus-filled, infected saddle sores are no fun. When you have bleeding, pus-filled, infected saddle sores you cannot ride your bicycle. Riding your bicycle is fun.
2. Experienced cyclists will see your panty lines and laugh at you.
As Mr. T might say, I pity the fool who wears underwear under his or her bicycle shorts.

get yourself some good wicking performance-oriented underwear, and you won't have to wash your cycling shorts very often, especially if you wear the underwear without cycling shorts. If things go south and you end up with infected saddle sores, there are still some antibiotics that work most of the time.

While talking to someone who ran a bicycle shop, I asked him about whether or not one should wear underwear underneath shorts or bicycle shorts. He advised me not to with with bicycle shorts. Furthermore, he told me about a friend of his who made the mistake of wearing underwear beneath his bicycle shorts. When he returned from his ride, his posterior felt incredibly sore. When he was getting cleaned up in the shower, the person I was talking to could hear his friend scream in pain the entire time.
Don't wear underwear under your shorts. You'll pay for it later.

Mr. Nazi,
Can you be more specific on the kind of sores you will get from wearing undies under yer bike shorts!?!
Any way, no Bleeding pus-filled, infected saddle sores can compete with the heart-wrenching, mortifying agony of having Experienced cyclists seeing your panty lines and laughing at you.--You were very kind to tell this person how to avoid revealing his pantylines and having Experienced cyclists seeing his panty lines and laughing at him.
Everyone should know that if YOU say "I said so" it really IS enough.

Dear Krazygluon:
May I call you "Krazy" for short?
Unless, as JanMM suggests, you are talking about cheap flip-flops, then this thread begs no questions. Thongs are underwear. Underwear does not belong under bicycle shorts under any conditions or for any reason. If you really want to wear a thong while cycling, wrap it around your ears and use it to keep your nose warm.
Underwear Nazi
"Fool for short"..."Krazy for short"...you people make this entirely too easy!

lol! Well, I wear underwear under my bike shorts. But then, I don't use padded shorts because I ride a recumbent and don't need the pad. No chafing problem, but my longest one-day ride this year was only 200 miles. Maybe if I rode more I'd have problems.
