The year is definitely wrong.

The boondoggle railroad temple hadn't even started construction then.

The trail goes through Irvine and NPB. You don't see many homeless in Irvine; the trail passes right by the Irvine PD HQ, and I'm guessing that Irvine subscribes to the "what you allow, you encourage" policy and their LEOs actively discourage homeless from settling down. Actively as in, they give them a one-way ride to Santa Ana, either in a patrol car or taxi. Irvine is supposedly one of the safest communities in America, so the LEOs aren't always real busy.

Regarding the portions that extend into NPB, the average value of the homes on the bluffs that border Back Bay is well into the neighborhood of seven figures, meaning that you have a good number of folks paying > $20K-$30K in property taxes annually. Something tells me they probably won't be real welcoming of urban campers setting up in/around those environs.

I have seen few - very few homeless just under 73 freeway. But no tent or anything like on Santa Ana River. They just wandering around and relieved themselves on bush by the drinking fountain. *rolleyes*

Yesterday LA County approved a $3.5 billion tax increase (over 10 years) to fund homeless programs. Maybe many of the SART residents will migrate up the 5 to enjoy all these new services.

More likely, this being California, this new money will displace current funding for homeless programs and that money will disappear down the budget toilet.

Like anything government related, most of the money is spent in the bureaucracy. You watch, the last 2 LA voter approved tax increases (for billions of dollars) won't do a thing for the homeless problem. "The system" will suck up the money, expand beyond belief and the homeless will still be homeless. Because it's not about the homeless, it's about the money.

F-You to those on here that want to finger-wag at people who just want to live in a safe area. Your job is to eventually make enough money to distance yourself from the crazies, because the crazy bring everyone down with them. It's only lunatics that want to bring the crazies into, or near their own neighborhoods.

Unless you can put these people into hospitals against their will (and we can't), there is no solution. There is no homeless problem in more affluent areas where these policy makers live, but they have no problem exposing the rest of us to this insanity. F them.

Sorry to seem heartless, but there's no solution so the only solution is to move them along, make them someone else's problem. If you're too weak to move them along, then you deserve to be subjected to the problems they bring along with them.

The way I see it, there's 3 groups that seem to make up this problem and groups 2 and 3 are the real problem. Group1 is a small percentage that have real mental problems and it's really sad that those won't get the help they need but you can't make them help themselves so I really don't know what to do. Group2 likes living that way (off the grid). If you want to live off the grid, fine, but do it somewhere else. Group3 likes the cover of the other 2 groups. This is the violent group that takes cover in this mess and wreaks havoc in not only the homeless community, but also the neighboring communities with theft and assaults. You gotta move these people along. The importance of protecting the women and children in your community from these predators far outweigh the so-called rights of these folks to live amongst us.

As a test, those that want to allow this mess, how many from groups 2 and 3 would you take into your home or yard. I'm willing to bet ZERO.

CA is becoming a sanctuary only for those breaking laws, not law abiding, tax paying (highest in the nation in most categories) citizens. The citizen's sanctuaries of their homes and communities are being shattered by bad, lazy policy. That won't change until we make our elected officials accountable for their bad policies.

And how are you, Mr. Internet Tough Guy, going to move them along? My money says you haven't got the balls to even go into Tent City let alone move anyone along.

Another brilliant post by an uniformed ,fear addled simpleton.

The Stadium property's fence next to the SART was never very 'stout', just simple poles with chain-link between them, but it did have gates in it so you could ride a bicycle to-and-from a game during the summer. They'd be locked at other times (simple chain and padlock). Not sure if the gates are still there, since I don't live that close to Angel Stadium anymore, but I'd assume the homeless are just getting on the stadium property by simply climbing over the fence.

It is beyond dispute that Anaheim Stadium brings a fair amount of revenue to the city and the county. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I rode from Imperial to HB and back yesterday and, in part because of this thread, was a bit more careful to observe where I saw homeless. What I can't fathom is why they favor the stretch between Lincoln and Chapman. What is it that draws them?

I noted folks camping all up and down the trail, but some locations, like between the 405 and Slater, they were sparsely distributed (on the west bank). Seems like a decent location on the face of it, kind of isolated, no pesky cyclists passing by, so why so few homeless? Is it more dangerous at night?

Just another guy down on his luck feeling like he had to stab somebody multiple times while trying to enjoy some child porn on the bike trail.

Is there suitable camping terrain next to the golf club? Off the top of my head, I can't recall.

What I was asking, in effect, is what do they see that I don't? I'm sure there's some angle I must be missing.

It's mostly residential on the other side of the golf course, so starting a tent village right up against some homeowner's fence probably gets shut down real quick. They've clustered where there's easy access to surface streets, in industrial/commercial areas. I think that's why we see fewer tent cities at the north end of the trail-- in many spots, the trail is miles from anything, and the access points are really far apart.

Not as much junk on the trail today. Last week they had extension chords running overhead about 3 feet above cyclist heads just south of Orangewood.

I think it may have something to do with Santa Ana vs Anaheim. The homeless were cleaned up a few weeks ago in the golf course area. The steep underpass has been cleaned up for several weeks since they finished that new little playground/park at the new apt complex. Now a couple have returned but I'm guessing they too will be told to hit the road real soon.

I have several friends that are Anaheim and SA residents. Speaking with them today, they have said that they have been constantly complaining to the authorities about the homeless in the area. One female friend told us today that she stopped at the park and a homeless guy who was bathing in his underwear asked her if it was ok if he removed his underwear to wash them while she was there. She immediately reported him to the cops. I'm so happy! This is the kind of crap that will force the authorities to do something about the problem. Stabbings, child porn, indecent exposure, stealing bulldozers, Anaheim stadium, keep it coming!

It's been making the News a lot here lately.

Homeless encampment near Angel Stadium raises security concerns | abc7.com

Bulldozer joyride at Angel Stadium, influx of homeless prompts Angels to ask for more police - The Orange County Register

Even the Spanish speaking TV channel had a section on it (the link is not working)

Regardless of whatever solution you propose or back, this has gotten WAY out of hand.

Exactly my point..... before others start insulting one for having concerns over safety in our backyards.

Doesn't matter how much you feel for an actual homeless person who is down on their luck, you get enough (including drug addicts/ thieves/ thugs) and place them in a large amount in one area, you can only expect bad things to happen. That is what is happening.

I only hope they do something about it before they start robbing and stabbing the "hardworking" people with hopes of enjoying a good game at the stadium or a fun bike ride.

BTW, side note. I saw a cyclist at Edna Park about a year ago offer some young homeless guy a job with his company. He didn't seem very interested on "getting back on his feet." Pretty much blew off the guy that was offering the job.

The highest paying entry level job in California (and 34 other states) is welfare.
