San Antonio to Garner State Park

I've been trying to look for a route from San Antonio to Garner State Park. We will be riding in mid May. Any Suggestions? Has anyone done this route before?

I do not.

However, if you ask in the Touring, or Long Distance forums, you might find someone that will be able to point you in the direction of a tool that will help you.

Well, you can go around from the south through Hondo and then via Utopia which will take you straight into Garner.
I did some riding in Leaky last weekend and we drove back home that way. This is all very flat and the vast majority was free of traffic on Sun morning.

The route from Vanderpool to Leaky is hellishly steep and difficult. If you are carrying weight, it will suck big time.

You might also look for a route from SA -> Bandera and then Utopia is easy from there.

There are several people riding across Texas and writing their journals on crazyguyonabike.com: Bicycle Touring: A place for bicycle tourists and their journals. They might give you some ideas on routes.

I live in Utopia

I'd take Potranco road to Rio Medina. Then 2676 to the north side of Hondo. West on 462 to 421, then west to 1796. Take 1796 until it ends at 187, then north to Utopia. West on 1050 to Garner Park.

It's all in what you want out of life, I suppose. Some options to consider:

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/20215135
Just about the shortest route, and certainly the one with the least climbing. Lotsa shoulder-of-major-highway miles.

https://ridewithgps.com/routes/20215085
Longer, mostly quiet back roads. The hard climbing is in the first 18 miles.

The profile of this almost-century route looks like the stage that decides the Tour de France.
