I just got some shorts that are for cycling, but no liner etc..
I may sew some chamois leather in like in the old days, & call it good.
It worked well for 10s of K miles with no shoulder straps.
Better ventilation.

Bibs or shorts, it doesn't matter to me. I have both.
I think there are some downsides to bibs: they're a bit of a hassle for number 1. For number two, a royal pain in the ass, so to speak, because of the need to remove the jersey. The extra material over my shoulders and on my back holds in the heat, too, which isn't a good thing when it's hot.
If bibs really were so awesome, then why aren't we all wearing suspenders, or why aren't there integrated straps for shorts and pants we wear off the bike?
Maybe bibs work better for people who sport large guts. That's what I've read here many times. I don't know for sure because I'm fairly slim. Shorts fit me just fine.
I think it comes down to confirmation bias. People who buy bibs like them because they paid a chunk of money for them. And because they see people who are bike racers wearing bibs, they want to look like like they race, too. It all comes down to 1) wanting to fit in with the crowd you run, I mean ride with, and 2) succumbing to marketing by the people who make bikes, bike clothing and bike accessories.

I liked the sparsely padded, genuine chamois shorts too BITD. But really, your chances of getting a good fit without bunching and chafing by doing it yourself are slim to none. IMO.

Pros are almost always on skinsuits nowadays. Why is hardly anyone wearing skinsuits, if people who buy bibs only do it to look like they race?
As far as I know most of those brands (and their evil marketing departments) that make bibs also make shorts.
I think the only valid explanation so far is that all bibfans are fat.

I like bibs better, but I do have a pair of shorts that I like and stay in place fine (~74kg 173cm).
I will say that the straps can absolutely help with keeping your shorts/tights in place. I have dhb Flashlight bibs and tights. The non bibs do not stay in place at all, while the bibs are quite comfortable (I like the simple dhb pad). My thighs might be a tad large for those, even though they're same size as every other dhb bibs/shorts that I have...
