top 5 foods for weight loss / training

Shame on me - my metabolism has kept me from ever thinking about my weight...until now. What have you found to be your favorite foods when you are training and trying to loose weight?

Hmmm...Okay, here goes
Diet Coke
Chicken breasts
Strawberries
Fat Free hot dogs
Lite hot dog buns
Tortillas

Hey, actually, I eat almost anything within reason. What I mean is, I don't munch down on Doritos very often, but I don't deprive myself either.

Tuna
Sara Lee Delightful Whole Wheat Bagels (mmm....sooo good and low cal)
Diet Coke
Turkey Breast
Healthy breakfast (multi-grain cereal with skim milk)
Baby Carrots and tons of 'em. Low cal, so tasty and also quite filling.
Also some amounts of pasta and rice because they are low in fat and somewhat low in calories. But you can't have too much. Also stay away from cream sauces on the pasta.

It's more about what you don't eat. It's better to cut the crap from the bottom of the list, which leaves lots of better stuff at the top.

Lose the empty calories, and the less processed it is, the more good it does you.

My shopping choices are Wal-Mart or Wal-Mart - here is the bread we like -
Sara Lee - 100% whole wheat classic
1g fat
135 mg sodium
13 g carb
2g dietary fiber
2 g sugar

Does this count?

Actually, I'll have to check, I buy High Fiber, Low Cal. Wheat bread at H.E.B (think its Sara Lee, but I could be wrong)

Think its in the 4g range if I'm not mistaken.

My general rule.

Green veggies, as much as you want daily.
Anything that's got 3g of fiber in it is good because it takes some work for your body to break it down.

I've recently added turkey, ham (found some really good cuts).
Tuna, Salmon
Grape nuts
Apples
Bananas
Spinach
Green beans
Squash
cucumbers
zuchini

Also, I've found that using lime based salsas to replace salad dressings actually work well, and at 15 calories a tablespoon its a hell of a lot better than any of the cream based ones.

Spinach, soy cheese and salsa with hard boiled eggs=love

Not steamed peas -- steamed soybeans.

maybe but I think those slices have 80-100 calories. Try the Sara Lee Delightful Multi-Grain (is uses whole wheat flour and no enriched flour) and it's 45 calories per slice. They have a Honey Wheat too I believe.

1) Noodles. Chinese Noodles. For carbing up before a ride, so you have enough energy to get anywhere. "Simple" carbs, without fiber, used strategically.
2) Boiled egg over salad. Fiber and protein, and fat from mayonnaise. A critical part of my post-ride meal. Makes me feel full.
3) Chicken. Tandoori Chicken. Mmmmm Protein.
4) Fish Curry Rice. Carbs, protein... not much fat.
5) VEGETABLES. Steamed, boiled, whatever. Because you function better chock full of phytonutrients, and the fiber keeps you feeling satiated longer when eaten with other foods.

And 6) PIZZA. A whole pepperoni and cheese. Why? Because refeeding keeps your leptin levels high, and your fat loss going. Not more than once every 10 days or so

Lowfat but NOT nonfat yogurt
Salmon
Brown rice
Lentils
Lots and lots of colorful veggies, including some raw each day
Pasta (al dente)
Cereal (Kashi makes some great ones with plenty of soluble fiber, I eat it with yogurt)
Hummus
Fruit
Fake meat products (I have a serious addiction to Morningstar Farms Buffalo Chik'n)
Lots of water
Vogels Flax and Soy bread (so yummy! So fiber-ful!)
Trader Joes low-sodium mixed nuts (Brazil nuts for selenium!)
Chocolate soy milk (after ride recovery drink)
Quinoa
Polenta
Chicken sausage
Green tea (antioxidants and appetite suppressants as well as go-juice!)

Oh, man, I love food so much, especially guilt-free healthy food! Trader Joes makes these great frozen ready-to-heat products, I adore their Biryani and their Potato Medley and Ratatouille!

You're right about this.

So my recommendations would be:

1/ Beer
2/ Chips
3/Wine
4/Red meat
5/Cheese

and plenty of baguette!

Edamame is soybeans in the pod. Doesn't sound that great, but they actually taste fantastic. Soybeans are nearly the perfect food (nutritionally speaking).
