difference between trail bikes and XC bikes
It sounds to me like 'trail' bikes would be the most 'tame' kind of mountain bike. For riding on bike trails, right?
Is this wrong?
I figured, in order of suspension travel and beefyness:
trail bikes
XC bikes
all mountain bikes
downhill bikes
freeride bikes
Is this wrong? I've seen some 'trail bikes' that look like all mountain if not freeride bikes..

Throw the stick!!!!
XC bikes typically have less travel than "trail bikes". To me trail bikes and all mountain bikes are pretty much the same thing.

Trail and All mountain bike are a beefier than your XC bike. They are heavier and more durable. Most true XC bikes are more race oriented(light weight, quick steering).Freeride and DH bikes are more point shoot and hang on!!
