Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? And thanks, SHBR, you have brought up a good point. There is no knee interference, even when out of the saddle on a hill climb. In fact, the bars put your body in a powerful position for out of saddle riding.
Whatever works for you but:

I ride a fixed gear bike with stoker bars like these, except turned the right way. Weather permitting, I ride it about 100 mi/wk. Looks to me like the backwards placement of the bars would limit your leverage for climbing.

...nearly 60 years old?? I'm 71 and didn't start riding fixed until I was nearly 60 years old.

This has been mentioned before, but they don't. In fact, they put the body in a powerful position for out of saddle climbing.

We have few hills here in Indiana, except for very steep, short hills around our sand dunes. I'm running 38x15 gearing with an SRAM Automatix 2 speed, giving me gear inches of 67" and 92" with 28 mm tires. I've not found one hill that I can't climb with this setup.

Great that you are riding, I plan to do the same as long as I can. I had to take ~ 9 months off of riding due to my quadruple bypass surgery last year. Now I feel as strong as I ever have on the bike.

I'd hope you can climb some hills on 67 GI. (jk)

Now, go find the multiple gears forum.

This is the best thing I've read in this thread. Gentle roasting aside, I'm glad to hear you're still out riding and feeling strong.

Well, he's not the first to run this kind of set up I guess...
More of these strange setups
I really believe the OP would benefit from a set of THESE instead though. But, ride what you want As long as you're riding!

Nein.

Those Mustache bars pull the body forward, not back for a more upright position.

Unless I mounted them with the open ends facing forward? HMMM?

Yeah I guess so.

Backwards Bullhorns?

Wow, exactly what I did, and with similar findings. From 10 years ago. Thanks for sharing, I had not seen that before.

No haters on that thread!

No problem!

There's always gonna be haters, purists, perfectionists, etc. At the end of the day as long as you're safe, happy and enjoying your cycling, I don't see anything wrong with it, even if I wouldn't use that particular setup myself.

Does he live in Indiana????

https://chicago.craigslist.org/nwi/b...368128892.html

Anyway, this thread is beyond out of control. Buuuuuut... isn't that the norm?

I think when bars are set up like that for comfort (I know because I can't sustain aggressive aero tuck as well due to neck issues like I used to) it always seems to be a sizing issue then maybe? That doesn't look comfortable at all to me. Meh, to each his own yeah?

agreed, i am fairly new to the forums and single speeds/fixed gear riding. i love the tinkering and experimenting with my bikes especially for comfort, and was intrigued by his idea. i get numbness in my arms after 10 miles on my bull horns, and don’t enjoy the flat bars ride so i’m going to flip them over and try it. ya ******!

I had avoided commenting here because I don't really care what other dumb **** guys do to their bikes, but since this seems to be the thread that keeps on giving...

This particular handlebar phenomenon seems to be contagious. Of all places, this pic just popped up in a vintage steel bike group that I follow, and amazingly - they did not crucify it. Go figure

It's funny how the people most likely to threaten leaving an internet forum are usually among the least likely to be missed.

Surprised at the haters. You completed the swap/chop and works good for you. Should be nice for someone looking for flat bars and a way to be more upright. Thanks for sharing as this is what BFs should be all about.

Thanks Joesch!

A young woman, seasoned bike commuter, purchased the Raleigh Mixte I posted earlier in the thread. She commented was that she loved the handlebar setup.

OP's bars make a hell of a lot more sense than the wide-ass uncut flats and risers people are running these days. They're not for me, but they make sense enough to me. Rock on, OP.
