Some threads won't let me view beyond a certain page

Some threads won't let me view beyond a certain page
I've noticed this on threads with very high post counts. One won't let me past page 680, another it is 1033 I think. It's really strange. I can't find a way around it.
I've tried the following:
1) Pressing the 'next page' (">") button
2) Pressing the 'last page' (">>") button
3) Manually editing the web address to the next page (replace 680 with 681, for example)
What am I doing wrong here?

I've experienced the same issue on megathreads. The Craigslist/eBay "Are you looking for one of these?" thread is a good example.
