Bicycles of India
India is fascinating in many ways, but I did not expect the amazing number of bicycles on the streets, the creative way bicycles are used, and the vintage technology still employed. I promised Merziac I would share some of the photos upon my return, but we’ve got good WiFi here in Ahmedabad, so here are some samples:

Just like in China, there must be a bazzilion bikes in India and hundreds of different local brands.....
I bet there's many interesting, unique designs not seen outside of the country that evolved through the yeas if one just looks deep enough......
The older ones must have been mostly based on English bikes.

Cool. 
We don't here much about bikes from this part of the worId. ISO 635 roadster still used for a tire size? Looks like roadster type bikes are still the standard.

Here in Cambodia the Japanese step thru market bike has taken over, particularly mixtes. Brakes are either external hub mounted rear drum type brake and cheapy stamped front single brake or nothing.

The photo of bicycle wheels used to make a huge roller is to wind glass dust coated kite string for the annual kite festival in Ahmedabad. The string is so armed to cut the strings of other kite fliers.
I was surprised to see the BSA logo still in use on the bike shop there.
I would recommend a trip to India for any vintage bike enthusiast. You’ll be amazed by the creativity and ingenuity of the wonderful people there. The bicycle is such an important part of their daily lives and survival.

Significantly, the late, great Hans Rosling, whose YouTube videos I highly recommend, defines the difference between mere poverty and hopeless, abject poverty as ownership of a bicycle, because it so liberates and enables its owner.
