Long time US Brompton dealer NYCE Wheels has as of current an advertised stock 2018 black M6L price of $1349 (that's $150 off either their regular or previous price). But let's say there's a desire for custom paint. Entering the 'Brompton builder' on their web site, one can get a veritable rainbow of colors - and a displayed M6L price of $1980!
REI currently has only M6 models and only in steel. No S, H or P, no titanium, no two-speed, no color variants. More of a Ford Model-T approach.

In 2005 with the arrival of the S and P-Models and the titanium versions Brompton invented so called "key models" which were i.e. the S2Lx, the M6RD and the S3L. These were preproduced in a limited range of colors (typically black and red) that were free of charge. As they were preproduced they were more or less instantly available for pick up at the dealer or from the distribution whereas an individually configured Brompton was called "à la carte" and was produced on order, resulting in a delivery time of at least six to eight weeks. Since 2010 there were times when Brompton would not accept orders for titanium bikes at all and when they did lead times were often 3-6 months and sometimes longer. And this was for buying in Europe.
With REI having a huge amount of shops it makes sense for them to limit the variability drastically. So they possibly agreed on some "key models", making logistics more easy. The M6L is btw. the best selling Brompton in the US.

The margin on Bromptons is quite good, for the factory as well as for the dealer (as far as I know). And with the distribution in the US and Asia being in the hands of Brompton now they have more room to play as they cut out one of the middlemen.

I've no dog in this hunt but Salsa recently did the same thing, started selling through REI.

Unlike Cannondale which has product in every REI location, only 11 stores nationwide were selected to have Salsa product on the sales floor. Everything else is web based or available for order.

Speculation but maybe Brompton has the same sort of arrangement with only select locations having physical product.

Why did you publish this list of names? I can see no purpose whatsoever.

What you want is to find current share value and where you can buy some. The information is freely available, but I won’t give links in case you publish them, too, and start a run on the shares

Definitely. Don’t you realise, if we take the plot lines of CIS, NCIS or whatever the current US fantasy copshow now is, that you have published a hit list which a terrorist group sponsored by an evil rival bike manufacturer will use to eliminate all Brompton shareholders until they control the company?

Maybe this will help the small USA dealer network. As more people ride Bromptons more will want to own one. I was in my local Brompton dealer and a customer bought a 6 speed Ti because she had tried her inlaws bike. More Bromptons out there will mean more sales. Also Rei I'm sure is not going to carry all the different options like bags, racks and parts that only fit on Bromptons. Then you have the issue of repair work that most bike repair men couldn't do. I remember the video of the bike shop owner those customer brought in a Brompton to change out a rear flat. He couldn't figure out how to undo the rear wheel. I maybe wrong but if you build it they will come.

In light of the USA-market factory fresh sub-$1300 M6L (with trivial to obtain discounts) through REI, there are a lot of overpriced used Bromptons on Ebay now.

A couple years-old (without the 2017 upgrades) lightly used M3L? Now maybe $800~$900?

I have not thought of that.

I'm not sure what the value of a 6 versus 3 speed is in the used market. I get the sense that most folks get the 2 or 3 speed versions. So you're estimate is reasonable.

Clearly. Even from the website you can only "preorder" rather than directly buy. So they don't even have the bikes in the warehouse yet but expect to start shipping within the next month.

When my friend worked at REI and I asked about ordering a bike, he shared they could order any bike from a company they worked with even if not advertised in store or online. If I recall there was an extra $50-75 for shipping because the special order. This was probably 8 years ago.

But pre ordering offers the Menu of their many parts and color options..

as it is that gives you a lot of their various types. 1,2,3,6 speed, S, M.H.P Bars,, racks mudguards bags saddles seat posts

steel or Ti portions..

Brompton only sells thru dealers* , dont confuse them with Bikes Direct sounds like REI has become one of their dealers..

* SJS Cycles UK wont ship their B parts, to the US, because of Brompton, now, has a dealer network , here.

One person's over priced used bike is another person's 'holds its resale value in todays's market'

watched the restored Motorcycle auction on TV last night , the bidding on the ones from Steve McQueen's estate collection,
resulted in rather high, collector's prices..
The nature of auctions works like that.

Brompton reduces bike prices in the US
by BRAIN Staff
Published November 7, 2016
NEW YORK CITY (BRAIN) — Brompton Bicycle has announced immediate retail price reductions for its folding bikes and related accessories, citing efficiency improvements at the brand's new factory and the strength of the U.S. dollar.

The base price for Brompton's 2017 model year bikea has been reduced from $1,250 to $1,199. Brompton's most popular configuration the M6L, a 6-speed bike with fenders, with two colors of paint, now has an MSRP of $1,499, down from an MSRP of $1,691 earlier in 2016. The company also eliminated its $98 custom color surcharge earlier this year.
Source: Brompton reduces bike prices in the US | Bicycle Retailer and Industry News

So the 6-speed is everything but uncommon. Regarding the prices of used Bromptons: They are overpriced when compared to new ones, especially the older models. The main reasons are for one that for an innocent mind a Brompton looks pretty much the same, no matter how old it is and most people do not know about the continuous stream of enhancements that the Brompton has achieved over the years. Second is that there is more demand for used Bromptons than there are offers - it seems that buying a Brompton is something people have thought about properly before actual buying and therefore most tend to keep it once they have one.

Also traditionally Brompton's prices increase each year, fostering a pretty stable price for used bikes.

From experience with the German market (which has traditionally been pretty strong for Brompton) I would assume that this will change: Over the last couple of years Bromptons became increasingly popular over here, leaving the niche of nerdness they used to live in. A side-effect was that with more Bromptons on the streets they became even more popular as more people see them. Some of those people sell them again used relativeliy quickly, so the used market grew, especially with relatively new bikes. And this, after a certain point, leads to lower prices for used bikes. They are still not cheap and still old bikes are massively overpriced, but with relatively recent ones there are chances to grab a good to fair deal now.

Possible that the same happens in the US now, especially with the lowering of the prices for new Bromptons. I may possibly take a while until sellers have realized the new prices.

Hopefully you're right. We've got an REI not far from us here. If they sell a lot of Brompton bikes maybe it would raise the brand profile and we'll start selling more as well. I don't know though. A lot of our sales are online or telephone orders. I imagine REI will cut into a lot of that.

Oh, Anna says hi.

Just noticed REI have three Brompton prices listed. M6L = $1525, M6R = $1660 and the H6R = $1989. They make the Tern link D8 @ $750, look like a bargain. It'll be win, win for Brompton with all this exposure.

Whoopee! My mistake. I generally see 2- and 6-speed versions around. Although I don't think it changes the discussion.

Yeah, okay, sure, but I worked through the 'custom Brompton Bike Builder' on both the Brompton USA and NYCE Bikes websites and got a price for an M6L+luggage block, like the sub-$1300 black one available through REI, but with the only custom specification being a different color of paint. On both websites I came up with a quoted price of:

$2010!

So now we're down to everyone's personal definition of 'slightly more'.

On both websites I came up with a quoted price of:

$2010!

So now we're down to everyone's personal definition of 'slightly more'.
I do not know what exactly you have been doing but I just configured a colorful steel Brompton M6L (in green and berry crush ) with Carrier Block via the bikebuilder on the Bromton.com website (country switched to US) and ended up with:

Total RRP:
$ 1524.01

Which is 0.99$ below what REI is charging for a black one, obviously w/o the REI cashback-scheme. At Nycewheels com they sell the M6L for 1499$ in various colors. What have I done wrong?

Regarding the "sub 1300$" M6L from REI: They sell it for 1525 and say you'll typically get back 10% after the end of the year as a REI member which would then bring you down to 1378$, but with a delay. How would you get lower? At least in Europe you may be able to get a 10% discount during the off-season for stock bikes even with normal shops - is this different in the US?
