Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My First Bike

I am thinking of buying a Lamond Alpe D'Huez an "04" model for 1320.00 out the door. It is Aluminum Carbon/Damping Composite and has all Ultegra components. I was also thinking of a buy a Trek 2300. Which of these would be the better choice. Would the ride be similar between each of these bicycles. I would like to start with a desent bike that I would be happy with for a long time. Thanks for your input.

What model year is the 2300? 2004 or 2005? How much can you get it for?

The Alpe D'Huez is typically a 105 bike with a Ultegra RD. If it is $1320 with all Ultegra, it is a rockin deal. However, the fit of a Trek is completely different than the fit of a Lemond even though they are made by the same company. Lemonds typically come in odd sizes (Treks come in even sizes) and Lemonds have longer top tubes compared to their seat tubes. So you are going to have to test ride them and see what feels best for you.

I have yet to test ride them. I plan too. I want to join the Louisville Bicycle Club that has rides throughtout the month but I am concerned with the 20 mile rides to start with.

I would get the Lemond, but you need to ride them both and decide for yourself. Both good bikes.

As far as 20 mi. rides are concerned, ride as much as you can when you get your bike, increasing the milage each time. You will be up to 20+ miles in no time, and they won't seem hard at all!
