Added to the normal cost of automobile registration ($20 or $25), the specialized plate
will cost an additional $30, or $60 if a personalized plate is desired.

The Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation (DBPT) will receive $20 per plate
for bicycle education and safety initiatives.

I wish the graphic was larger, but at least the extra $ is going to 'safety initiatives'... [/cynicism]

cool. i like the SC one better though. mainly because the "share the road" bit is easier to read.

plus, it doesn't look like a "standard" SC tag, either. so it's immediately apparent what it is.

More people should look into getting this done in their own states. It's generally not that difficult, I don't believe. Last I heard one just hae to get X number of people signed up to order one.

I'm looking up Maryland's info. Hm, in MD it looks like you have to be an "organization". That's probably just some goofy wording or something. It looks like the Batlimore Bicycle Club has a plate. I'll look into it further.

South Carolina's regulation is worded like that, but we have the Palmetto Cycling Coalition that emcompasses the entire state.

The state still needs 5 more applications to get to
the necessary 300 to issue the Share the Road plates. If you've been
considering it, now is a good time to order one. Here is the link:

If only "share the road" didn't mean "cyclist, share, don't hog, the road (meaning, stay out of MY way)" to so many motorists...

Quoting from that STR page
The Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation (DBPT) will receive $20 of the fees collected per plate to be used for a variety of bicycle education and safety initiatives. For example, these funds may ...
Unfortunately, DBPT's "bicycle education" hasn't included helping cyclists to use the traveled way, but rather have assisted NCDOT with its apparent goal of making sure that motorists don't ever have to yield to cyclists.

For example, on DBPT's Bike Laws page under the banner "Legal Issues Related to Bicycling", DBPT provides the following "clarification" of N.C. law:
It is important to ride ... so that cars may pass safely.
An example from DBPT's Guide to NC Bicycle and Pedestrian Laws
Being passed: A bicyclist cannot take actions to prevent another vehicle from ... passing.
This conjured up rule (it's not in the rules of the road of NC) would require the inferior driver (i.e., cyclist) traveling in a marked lane to yield when a superior driver (i.e., motorist) wants to use the lane the cyclist is using, even when it's too narrow to share.

Rather than paying $30 every year to fund more of that kind "bicycle education", cyclists in N.C. could do what some other cyclists have already done: get some nice looking stickers with a less ambiguous message (such as "Same Roads, Same Rights, Same Rules"), put 'em on your vehicle(s) and then hand out any extras to your friends.

FYI: According to the N.C. Bicycle Facilities Planning and Design Guidelines document, the STR plaque was originally
...intended to increase bicyclists' visibility without designating the signed roadway a preferred route. It is intended for use on roadways with high levels of bicycle traffic but relatively hazardous conditions for bicyclists.
In his paper about the STR plaque, Wayne Pein writes:
The W16-1 SHARE THE ROAD plaque was created with admirable intentions. It was intended to broaden the W11-1 Bicycle Crossing Warning sign into a Bicyclist Traveling Warning sign. But the SHARE THE ROAD plaque has troubling ambiguities, and its usefulness is questionable. There is no credible evidence to indicate that the W16-1 placard enhances the W11-1 sign, but there is rationale that the 'share the road' message is not received as intended by some motorists and bicyclists.
