Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ok so it looks like there are at least 3 or 4 BF members riding the Covered Bridge Metric on Aug 21st (Sunday). So this thread is to organize those riders and maybe get some additional participation from the BF. They have 100, 50 and 25 km ride routes and registration is $20 (was $15 and maybe through active.com for $13?). Check it out. Go here for ride info.

Update: Ok so here is the plan as it currently stands. We will meet at/near the "help desk"/rider assistance area near the registration area. Mirona has made a banner so look for that in the help desk area...see banner below. The Meeting will be to meet there between 8:30 and 9:00 and roll out between 9:00 and 9:30. Feel free to PM me your cellular number as I am apparently putting together a list.

Edit: ride list preferred start in ()

My neck of the woods.

Much better rides (hilly, deserted, awesome views) southwest of the route area but not as many covered bridges left. I might go for it though, seeing as how close it is (plus it's only 100km).

Ok here is a question for those that may have attended in the past: What time does the ride start? It says on the site that registration the day of the even is from 7:30-9:30 with the course closing at 4:30. My last metric was in 3:39 min or fide time with very few stops (like 1 which was only 5 min) which tells me I could start at noon and still get done in their time limit. I guess what I am asking here is that with a 2.5 hour drive to get there....what time are we meeting? I would like to start towards the end of registration if that is ok with everyone else...I don't feel like getting up at 2am or any crazy time like that.

I'm not driving all the way down there the morning of, so tomorrow (I'm not paying for long distance at the house!) I need to call motels in the area. I can tell you then what's going on. If I do go, I'd like to ride earlier because afterwards I'm going to have a long drive home. We'll see.

Well if we plan to roll out at 9:30 we will for sure be done by 2:00 even if we stop to see all the sights and stop at all the rest stops (I assume there are rest stops...). More like 1:00-1:30. Is that early enough?

I have 2.5 hours of driving before and after so if I get there at 8:45 that means I left home at 6:15 which isn't too bad....any earlier though is pushing it for me.

Looks like about a 2 - 2.5 hr drive for us so we'll prolly leave early in the morning the day of the ride, and try to get there by 9:00-9:15.

Count me in as #4, already registered. I know a few people who have done it in past years and will see them at tomorrow's club ride; I'll see what I can find out about time frames/rest stops, etc. and will post what I find. With a 30 minute drive to get to the start, I can go pretty much any time that day; just need to be back home by 6:00 or so.

If you're looking to make a weekend of things, the Mt. Gretna Arts Festival is the 20th and 21st (https://www.mtgretnaarts.com/), with some beautiful country routes around the area.

good ride, great food afterwards too, very well run, smile for the photographers and all willl be good. I remember two rest stops on the century ride but there may be more. We started later in the morning and it was fine, the only thing was you had to park further away.

I might ride it.
About 3 hours for me to get there.
This would be the reason to have bike forum jerseys, huh?

Just a heads up to those who want a late start, it seems the later you start out the more crowded the roads are with cyclist. Last year I did the ride for the first time in years and didn't hit the road till around 9AM and I can't remember ever being on the road out of sight of other riders. I didn't pre-register this year, but if the weather looks good and I can get up out of bed early enough to drive to the start by between 7 and 8 then I'll do it. (Luckily I live only about 30 or 40 minutes north.)
If you like covered bridges and a more challenging terrain then you should check out the Central Bucks Bike Club Covered Bridge ride which is on Oct 16.

Bump with rider list added to first post. Those that don't have a preferred start time just let me know and I will stick it in there so we can get some handle on this.

Ah, hell. I guess I'll do it. I can ride to the start and ride home. Riding out to the Greenfield Rd. area might be suicidal though (industrial park traffic gives me the creeps).

On the plus side, it'd add about 40 miles (round trip) to my day.

Hi, Grass -

I can start any time...would probably prefer sometime between 9:00 and 10:00, but can be flexible.

Pseudobrit, may I ask where you're coming from? Can't be too far from me.....

Columbia. Down by the river. If I ride it I'll likely be going through Manor Twp. to get to the city.

I'm planning to ride, either with a friend or people from work.

Does anyone who's ridden in the past know the spacing of water/food stops, and also of total climbing? My Topo of the sample course on the Lancaster Bike Club site gives about 5500' climbing. My colleague at work says "big hill right before lunch".
