New to the biking world...

I'm new to the wonderful world of biking. What I want is to be able to completely replace my car with a bike. The reason I joined this forum was so that I could get some help from you guys on choosing a good bike, and what I can do to make it more like a car in terms of comfort and accessories.

Hi and welcome, tybbick! You should check out the commuting forum

I myself am partial to touring bikes, which are basically sturdy road bikes designed for long distance comfort without much sacrifice in terms of aerodynamics or weight. You can see my touring bike here: https://myxo.css.msu.edu/danimal/bike/bikes.html I ride it to work (10 mi rt) and around town almost every day. I use a rear rack and a pair of waterproof pannier bags to carry my stuff around comfortably.

When using your bike for transportation, important accessories are:
* rack and pannier bags (you can also get panniers that convert into a backpack)
* lights for safe night riding (a basic set will cost you $30 or so)
* fenders (so you don't get splashed when riding in the rain)
