Cycling actually keeping me from car free...

When I get home from Iraq in a few weeks I want to continue car-free as I have here. The problem I ran into the year before I came over here was that I had to drive with my bike to the various MTB races and road centuries around the southeast. I commute to work by bike and can accomplish most everything else by bike, but it's ironic that my love of competitive cycling and the fellowship with other cyclists in the MTB and Road clubs I belong to keep me from ditching the car completely...

Do you ride trails by yourself? I know you can't ride group rides by yourself. Have you considered getting one of the folks you ride with to pick you and your bike up before a ride? Certainly one of them has an SUV.

I do ride quite often by myself or with my son. When the club visits trails away from Birmingham, AL we do usually meet up at a central location and move bikes and gear around to take the least amount of vehicles as possible. As for races that's a different story, as most are on Saturday, I leave work friday drive to the event camp overnight and race. I am looking at alternative means to lessen my impact to the enviroment. I've been looking into getting a diesel car and running bio-diesel in it. After being over here fighting in an oil war for the better part of a year the last thing I want to be is a contributing factor.

I think it is very cool that you have been serving the country and yet you still keep a great perspective on the whole enterprise. Thank you sir!

I'm sure you'll figure out a way to do all the things you love doing, and still be carfree.
