cheap wheelset option?
hey, so i'm gonna build up this bridgestone frame i got for nada as a beater fg runaround, and i was wondering what the best avenue was for a cheap wheelset. but decent, you know? no jb welding road hubs or any crap like that.

You could try and build your own. That's what I'm gonna do, making my fixie conversion completely DIY.

yea, actually i was thinking about this last night. i can wrench just about everything on my bike, but the one thing i can't do is build or true wheels. there's always sheldon brown, of course, but are there any courses run in nyc (by time's up or similar) where you can learn wheelbuilding? cause i'd love to go totally diy with this project.

I learned off of Sheldon's web site. One of many things I've learned off that site. Just get all new parts for your first build, makes life much easier.

I followed Sheldon's site and have built 5 wheels so far. They're all standing up to courier work with no problems so far. It's not magic, just tedious. The first one took about 4 or 5 hrs, did the last one in less than 2.

I built my first wheel with no tools other than a screwdriver. I just laced it all up per Sheldon's instructions, and then paid the $10 for a truing/tensioning with tire and tube. Saves a LOT of money, and I can be positive that it is a strong, dependable wheel.
