858 vs 959 vs Eggbeaters

My bud is getting new pedals for his mountain bike. He wants to know the major differences between each of these pedals and which one would offer the best performance. He also wants to know what you would recommend, either then 959 or eggbeaters.

I have had equal performance from both pedals. I do how ever prefer the 959 just because I have used Shimano since they first started to make clipless. I have yet to try either one in muddy situations so I am not sure which one would do better in that type of enviorment.

Here I go again, and on my biased opinion over 959's

1. Better value
2. better mud performance
3. Easier to clip in, 4 sided entry
4. Weigh less and are cheaper
5. I believe that they are easier to get out of, and I have used 959's before.

i believe that the main differance between the 959's and 858's are that the 858's were last years top of the line pedal but it was soon found out that they were a ***** to get out of in most conditions including dry conditions. Basically except for being light they sucked.

I personally like eggbeaters

I had a good mud ride today, I planned a ride after work, it rained and I went anyway. If I had still had my SPDs it would have sucked as it usually did, instead I have my Eggbeaters; so much more fun. No clogging and no searching for my pedals.

Eggbeaters run tings.

How is the clipping in/cliping out in dry weather. Do they have the same problems as some of the mid end spd pedals do.

You have to remember this is my opinion: clipping in or out is just as easy as clipping in or out of SPDs, if not better. The platform of the pedal is small, and therefore trying to ride unclippped is hard for most people. In my case, the pedals are perfect because I stay clipped-in all the time. I can't ride my bike without being clipped in.

959s are the best pedals I have ridden, though I can't comment on the Eggbeaters. I also reduced my choice down to the 959s and Eggbeaters when I was looking for a set of new pedals, probably because they are both the best set of MTB pedals out there at the moment.
