It's surreal to see the images on TV of what was, 4 days ago, my neighborhood now under 8 feet of water. Made it out alive with my kitties, so that's all that's important. The only things I regret not being able to take are my CDs, my computer and my bike.

Hopefully it's still there and not too damaged when we can finally return in 2-6 months.

Any other fixies make it out to higher ground? Perhaps to Montgomery, AL? I haven't found any used bike shops here, but really want to get something.

Doing well though, can't complain too much when theres people in MUCH, MUCH worse situations.

Last I heard, after the levee broke in two spots, the city is level with the Lake. (THe city now has between 9-12 FEET of water in it in some areas. St. Charles Avenue (a main thouroghfair) has 9 feet of water. My friend's house is submerged (11 feet of water) in Mid-City. (So named because.. it's in the middle of the city.)

My basement apartment's street has between 3 and 8 feet of water on it, depending on what report I read. My celiings are 6'3" high.

No electricity for 6 months for some areas. I honestly don't know if the city can recover. This is the big one we've all been told stories about. The New Orleans killer I heard about in grammer school. Back when Betsy hit they all said "if it had hit New Orleans... blah blah blah" This is what would have happened... and Katrina was a Category 4. Not a Cat 5 like Betsy. I can't imagine it being any worse.

There were bodies floating around the streets in my friend's neighborhood. This is supposed to happen in FL, not here. (kidding of course)

Nola, glad you made it out. My uncle lives on the East Side and took off during the weekend, making it to Houston Sunday morning to stay with my other uncle. His home is definitely submerged and he's worried he won't find any of his belongings.

I was in NO last year before the Sugar Bowl (LSU vs OU) and have great memories hanging with family and seeing the city, partying with LSU fans. But, my thoughts and prayers go out to those who stayed behind.

the good news is..your bike is prob. submerged in an apartment no one would dive to rumage through.. and as long as it stays wet...its not going to rust... sorry.. thats the best good news i could come up with... glad you and your cats are o.k.

thanks for checking in, nola. i was wondering about you too. it looked like it wasn't going to be as bad as feared, because the surge was not as high. but when the levee breaks...that is just fûckloads of trouble. i only hope there is something we all can do to help.

oh man when i had to evac my house all i took were my clothes and my bike. i thought i would be able to come back. i think my uptown place is under about 7 feet of water now. tulane is under that much water too. who knows what ill do for my seinor year of college. im glad i have my family and my health.

this would be a good idea, chimblysweep, if there was a place to ride them right now, we need boats in nola.

Glad you and your cats got out okay. My father lived in old metairie for 10 years, and I loved visiting him there. I wonder if his old house is submerged. It's heartbreaking to see what's happened to the city.

I told my wife that if we had to evac, I would go by bike. She thought I was nuts, but I told her all those poor bastards are moving at 5 mph. I can do better than that. Besides, the only worldly possessions I would really miss would be my hard drives. Tangible goods can be replaced, data not so much. Of course I'm not sure how far Krista would make it.

She thought I was nuts. Then she was talking to her mother and mentioned my plan, to which my mom-in-law replied, "Oh definitely, and he could just put the dog in the trailer."

This is a disaster on par with the big ones... the 1906 earthquake, the Chicago fire, the Boston fire. Suck.

I'm being sent down to the command post in Alexandria tomorrow to work on the emergency response. I'll map out locations of any lost bikes and look at the trajectory for where they could be found in my, um, spare time.
