How many MPG does your bike get?
If you drank a gallon of vegetable oil, how far would you have to ride to burn off the calories?
I have calculated a gallon of pure vegetable oil at 30,719.992 calories.
Assume ideal road conditions;flat ground, no wind, riding at 20 mph solo or 30mph in a paceline(highway mileage)
Can someone do the math?
Any volunteer guiney pigs?

I guess I can do the experimental part (sorry, no idea how to do the math) when it gets a bit cooler out. I'll bring my bike to the track and down some vegetable oil while the old ladies give me funny looks.

Could you re-pose the question using Chianti Classico as the basis for your metrics. Thank you.

Well, you probably burn around 800 calories per hour (guessing) in those conditions. So, you could ride for about 38.4 hours.
That means you would get about 768 miles per gallon of oil. Not that I would try to ride all day drinking vegetable oil. BLEH!!!

you would have to work pretty damn low intensities to burn the oil. Because if you were kicking your ass your buring carbs, and a little fat. So...

I'd get less, with a smaller motor pushing a larger load. I wonder if those of us in the 50+ forum should use the "High Mileage" vegetable oil for engines that have seen quite a bit of use/abuse.

How did the OP arrive at veg oil, of all things?
Why not a carload of tiramisu?
Anyway, I've always heard that a racing cyclist burns an average of 1200 calories per hour.
I have it in a book somewhere, but i can't footnote it.

This is a FUNNY thread.
Seriously, i dont know about chugging... but if someone had a gallon and had a few tablespoons every hour, it might work. You'd be able to acutally use the stuff instead of going into convulsions from disgust and purging it everywhere.

...well, if you consumed a gallon of pure vegetable oil, you probably wont think about how many miles to burn it, but how many miles to the emergency room to pump it out.

I think the environmental impact from all the flatulence and eventual diarrhea would negate any benefits to using pure vegetable oil as cycling fuel.

I think the oil would pass through your system before your body had a chance to extract / convert all the calories into energy.
Who’s going to be the first to volunteer for this experiment?

Honestly, I take a tablespoon of plain flaxseed oil in the morning... if I was anywhere close to being able to ride that long, I'd volunteer... it'd have to be canola though I think and I'd have to do it in small increments. But we'd all see how far a gallon of oil would get us.

Its like the gallon challenge with milk? Could you put down a gallon of veg. oil in an hour?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember OLN giving a random fact that some of the racers consumed a couple thousand calories a day none from meat at that.

Many years ago I remember reading about a study which was done on the efficiency of the bicycle, and the figure they came up with was that a cyclist travelling 2000 miles uses about the same amount of energy as is available in one gallon (Imperial) of gasoline.
