Just had my Trek 4500 w/ disc brakes stolen, so I'm in the market for a new bike. Ideally, I'd like something a little higher end than the 4500 to be used for XC singletrack and adventure racing. I'm not a great mtn. biker by any means, just getting back into the sport after a few years.

I've been reading reviews and tested a few bikes today but am totally confused about what to get. I've tested the Specialized Stumpjumper (very comfortable but expensive at $1600 CDN and only has V brakes) and Gary Fisher Xcaliber (OK feel, most of the people who ride this seem to be bigger guys, are 29" tires too big for someone who's only 5'4?). I am also considering the Trek 6700 w/ disc (but haven't tested b/c I figure it probably feels alot like my 4500) and finally, I've read great reviews about the Kona Cinder Cone at mtbreviews.com so I'm going to test that tomorrow. I know they've all got different shocks, derailleurs etc., but which one is the best ride for my buck?

Any comments or suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

You might want to take a look at a Norco Wolverine...it's a really strong bike and has awesome parts FOR the money you pay. It costs around $600 CND.

Wolverine, or something kona (all kona's are overbuilt and really nice) or a specialized hardrock comp or pro.

I'd be interested in what anyone has to say about the Trek 6700 ... I'm looking to buy it as well.

Well I would go with the trek 6700. It is a very nice bike for beginners that want to get into xc riding. Um I love the bike the only think I swapped on it was the pedals for some time atacs. I would totally recommend the bike its been great to me so far and I've had it all mose a year. This bike totally rocks.
