I have a gt timberline fs hardtail with shimano stx components. it is probably about a 1997, and everything is original. sometimes I have this clicking in the crank area. it is usually at the bottom and/or top of the pedal stroke. I can actually feel the click in the pedals. I cannot find a pattern to it, it just happens competely randomly. It never makes the click while on a stand, only when I am riding it. it will even do it when I am pedaling backwards. I have tried a different rear wheel and cassette, and that did not solve the problem. I had a broken pedal, but I swapped that out and it still didnt fix it. The chain looks fine as far as I can tell. I tightened both crank arms. one was slightly loose but not much. I am thinking it is the bottom bracket since I have ruled most everything out. does anyone have any ideas, or should I just go swap out the bottom bracket?

Does it happen on all chainrings? If not maybe it could be a damaged tooth on a chainring. I have had a bothersome click that I eventually found to be the RH crank hitting the end of the front gearshift cable. Check seat and handlebars, because it is not always clear where the noise originates.

Yes it happens in all chain rings. It happens whether I am pedaling hard, or barely pedaling at all, or even pedaling backwards. Not all the time though. It will do it for a while, and then stop for a few miniutes then start back up. I will check the seat and handlebars tomorrow. I am fairly sure they are both tight as I have adjusted them several times since this problem started.

Sometimes the click is very soft and you can't really hear it you just feel it, and other times it is a loud click, almost clunking sound.
