Learning how to work on bikes
I recently purchased a Giant Iguana and love it. Now that I am a bike owner I am interested in learning more about the bike. My LBS was really good about going over a lot of the "basics", but I would like to learn more about the bike in detail (such as adjusting the deraluers, brakes, etc). I was wondering how you all learned about working on bikes and if it it would be reasonable to ask the LBS to go through the steps of tuning the bike with me when I bring it to them. Also, are there any types of manuals that go into detail about how to adjust specific parts? I read the instruction book that came with my deraleurs and brakes but they mostly explain how to place them on the bike.

You can always go to Sheldon Brown's site: www.sheldonbrown.com. He gives good explanations there.
Also, try www.parktool.com. They give classes in different areas of the country.

Ditto on Sheldon Brown and Park Tool. I would also add The Bike Website. He goes step by step through some of the most common issues you'll encounter on a bike, including a step by step guide to a tune up and an index of very common repairs that will have to be made. Sheldon Brown and Park Tool will be the most up to date though.
