Gutted

Hi all,

Just last week I had my 1989 Raleigh Record Ace stolen. That name belonged to a Tourer for some time but then Raleigh made it a racing cycle with Reynolds 653 & Shimano Sante groupset. I am, gutted. Don't know where I'll get a replacement (have looked on ebay) & I doubt if the scally-wag who nicked my bike really appreciates what it was.

Consequently I dug out some of my old Raleigh broucheres and found some real gems in their. I remember, when I was at school, really wanting a 1985 Road Ace Ex or a Competition 12. It was in 1989 that I eventually had the cash for a Road Ace but amazingly I got a Record Ace for the same price. What would be a suitable replacement for that bike today? How much would it cost? Seems like the cost of cycles has come down somewhat.

Amazingly, about 2 months later, I found my bike! It was for sale outside someone's house about a mile away from mine. I called the poilce and it was reurned to me. Unfortunately they didn't press charges. Only a dodgey saddle has been put on it. I'd replaced the original a long time ago.

Having seen afew threads where people are restoring their older bikes I may do likewise.

Excellent news! As a kid, I had a Coventry Eagle Kermesse - their top of the line Roadie, but I lusted after the Raleigh Record Sprint - all anodised black and gold. Even though my bike was way better, and it was really a mid range 501 bike, it just looked so cool. They turn up on Ebay now, and I've been watching for an affordable one nearby to me, just because I always wanted it. Oh, and a Super Burner. I guess I have a thing for Gold.......
