8 speed shifters?

Shimano still makes 8 speed RF+ shifters, if you don't mind them saying Alivio on them. My bike came with them, in the 3 years of riding my bike has seen just about every part has been changed, all except my headset, seat post and shifters. If they didn't work great I would have changed them, I have no complaints with their performance when paired with a SRAM 5.0 cassette, PC-59 chain and XT derailler. Maybe I just don't know what I'm missing.

Yeah.i was recently searching for 8 speed components and had a very hard time. Online shops don't seem to carry 8 speed and if they do it is a very poor selection. Even Ebay doesn't have alot.

Why not just change the cassette and chain and go 9 speed? It fits on your current hub

How about trying to find a local LBS other than the one that you went too. I know about five LBS and from what I have found out there's always one shop that has a hard part to get in stock. My particular LBS is a low budget Schwinn dealer that cater to the low end crowd. And he stocks up on parts that are old tech.

i have 2 lbs's. one is far away, one sucks. i dont like 27's because its simply too much. 21's are good, 24's pushing it imo. also, i don't want to buy a whole new casette, my casette is fine as it is. and i've heard bad things about 27's.

BEsides, I am 90% sure you can use 9spd shifters on an 8spd cassette. My gf does it and I have done it in a pinch.

Acera (8spd) on lx (9spd) cassette. Theory or not. I have seen and made this work. Obviously you have to limit the deraileur to not go past the 8th gear. But this did work. In fact. It still works on my gf's 2002 Stuff which came with an 8spd cassette and 9spd shifter and has original parts.
You are right in a way, could be a lucky match. But I have seen this work a couple of times. Obviously it isn't the cleanest of shifting, but it does the job
I am likely not as picky as some of the more xc oriented riders.But ya...friction shifters was my next suggestion, that or grip shift

Ah, well, I guess life just isn't fair sometimes. Nor is life. You're right, it does work, just not to the degree I wanted it to. I was able to shift into all of my gears, I just hated the way it did it.
