I'd like a simple. cheap odometer.
I looked through the existing threads kinda quickly and didn't see anything like this, so I'm starting a new one.
I would like an odometer. I don't need a bike computer that tells me how many calories I've burned, or my cadence, or the current moon phase, or whatever - I just want to be able to tell how many miles I've ridden. And thus, I'd like to pay not more than about $20, less if possible. Are there analog odometers?
If I have to get a full-blown computer, what's a good, cheap, simple one?
Can I use a pedometer, strapped to one leg? Has anyone tried this?
If it helps, I'm a casual roadie on a mid-70's Schwinn. I don't usually bike commute because I only live about four blocks from work - I walk. I live in a small town, so I ride around town quite a bit, and occasionally take off in one direction for a few miles and back. I take the bike and trailer for groceries (maybe 1 mile RT) and laundry (a few blocks) once a week each.

why not just cough up the extra $10 and get a normal computer?
This is less than the normal meal or even a movie now adays.

Even your LBS probably has a $20 model. The Cateye cyclometers are pretty popular, as well as reasonably priced. The Mity 8 and the Velo 5 can both be had for under $20. You could probably even find an enduro 8 under $20.

Even cheaper. Mapquest all your likely trips and keep a log or keep a log and Mapquest all your trips both methods = free. However, I would like to encourage the OP to ride longer intervals maybe pushing the mileage up so it is worthy of the investment one of the Cateye's mentioned earlier, maybe even an Astrale 8.

I have an inexpensive Specialized model on my patrol bike that has been reliable for at least 8 years. It has much heavier wires than most of the cheapies you see.
Cost a tad over 20 bucks, as I recall.

At my LBS (Performance): Cateye Velo 2, $14 or so. It had everything I wanted: a clock, an odometer, and a speedometer.

I got a Cateye Velo 2 for $7 from performance a couple years ago. Still works great 6300 miles later on the original battery. Just keep your eyes open, you find good deals pretty often.
