Fargo Street, CA??

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Fargo Street, CA??

Hey SoCal guys!!

I was just browsing some random club sites and noticed a hill that is pretty cool to try

I was wondering on where this street was so I can try it this weekend. I want to see how I like the 46 bars and from what the LBS said, "They should help with breathing up climbs". Can anyone please tell me the address or how to get to this street in CA?

I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks !!!!

PS: Looks kinda steep probably around 15% grade?

Right around the corner from me:

https://maps.google.com/maps?oi=map&q...os+Angeles,+CA

The hill section is between Glendale and Alvarado. Baxter St. is also just as steep, but a tad bit longer and with more traffic.

Good luck.

It's right at the beginning of the Glendale Fwy (the 2) just to the East of it and South of the 5 Fwy. At the bottom of the street the 2 Fwy is right behind you.

I think that the steep part is on the other side of the 2 between Allesandro St. and N. Alvarado St., but I could be wrong as you live right there and I don't.

On DeLormo Topo it shows it goes from about 520 feet to 656 feet in about 700 feet. That's 136 feet of elevation in 700 feet, do the math, please.

Grade is rise over run if I'm not mistaken.

136
----- = .195 = 19.5%
700

Ouch that would be like a 19% grade if my math serves me.

That's right, too. Allesandro intersects with Glendale right near Fargo, so it's pretty much the same thing.

Don't worry - you'll see it.

That doesn't work because 100% grade is a 45-degree hill. How do you grade hills above 45-degrees?

You are correct that 100% grade is eqaul to a 45 degree hill. Here is the formula:

grade = vertical_climb / horizontal_distance

where both vertical_climb and horizontal_distance are both converted to the same measurement units. So if a hill goes up 264 feet in 2 miles, then we can first convert 2 miles to 10560 feet -- so the grade is then 0.025 = 264 feet / 10560 feet, which is 2.5%

Thus a 45 degree hill is one that for each 1 foot horizontally you travel you go up vertically one foot or

1 ft / 1ft = 1.00 or 100%

Hope that helps everyone.

How about a report each from ovoleg and Fixer when the deed is done. See how many times that ovoleg can go up and down it. Then let's see just how close the reports will be to each other with there different vantage points.

Well I'll let you know when I will be coming over and you can watch me suffer

I haven't tried anything too crazy yet, This might be the steepest thing I ever rode up. I saw another hill near Griffith that hikes up to some kind of driveway but it was only 100ft or so, i had a hard time keeping the front tire from coming off the ground.

Is this hill the destroyer?? Is it possible to go up and down a few times without blowing up?

We shall see I saw pictures of it on a club site and it looked pretty steep for such a length

Read the article on their web site, it goes into detail about how many times people can ride up it in a certain amount of time and other trivia. Many commented on how it was hard to keep the front wheel down. Looking forward to your report.

lol miles ? My goal is to do it twice(hopefully at least once)

I hope to actually try another group ride tommorow morning and then drive out and try this in the afternoon.

I will probably pack the bike in my car too...it looks like its 30 miles from my house(freeways) so I doubt I'll ride there(probably be dead before I even start)

Yes lets do a duo report, I'll just have to bring some extra $$$ to pay Fixer to do the report "correctly"

Not trying is the worse than failing...

Come on, people have made this hill before right? I am bound to at least make it once up.

First time is hard, second time should be easier(mentally)

According to the LA Wheelmen, who run the annual hill cimb event, the street is a 30% grade.

OK.....I have less than an hour on Sat between my So Pasadena group morning ride and my afternoon commitments to observe, monitor, and take photographic evidence of your attempt.
You're free to do this on your own but if you need me as an official BF witness tomorrow, PM me.

How do you compensate for zig-zagging back and forth as seen in picture below?

Of course its still the same grade, ya' just cover a lot more distance traversing back and forth and effectively only encounter the full effect of the grade when you turn at the end of each traverse.
