So I've been thinking about building up a flip flop rear wheel with the surly hub and a salsa del gado rim. I just wanted to double check that there wasn't anything crazy wrong with that combination or see if there were any other suggestions for cheap quality?

I believe you can get them pre-built like that directly from Quality.

Quality is one of the major bike part distributors. In fact they also own Salsa and Surly. Many local bike shop websites will have a function where you can search out parts and accessories, and within that list is an huge database of parts.....most of which are not stock items at the store....but rather rough estimate of what is actually in stock at Quality.

I'm running basically the same setup, only Formula hubs. The Delgado-X rims are bomber. I'm pretty sure I could drop from loading docks if I lowered my seat. Also, if you decide to try some SS cyclocross, you are all set.

alright, sweet. I was hoping they would be pretty strong, because I guess I don't know how to ride or something, but I beat the **** out of my stuff. I'll check with quality too, I didn't know they owned salsa, I knew surly, but not salsa. Thanks again.

oh and a friend of mine keeps telling me to check out aebike.com because it's basically the entire quality catalog. I haven't been there, but if you're interested....

That's what I was referring to but you will also find that your LBS website might have the same search feature as aebike. Support your local shop

QBP doesn't own Surly or Salsa, it is a distribution company. Quality distributes a multitude of brands and products, but doesn't own all of them (or any of them, that I'm aware of).

I know they distribute a lot of frame companies, (banshee, bmc, salsa, surly, ?) but I am also pretty sure that they own atleast surly.

Speaking of QBP, what is the general opinion on Paul's Components hubs? Oh, and what is the difference between the Velocity Deep V. Rim and the fusion rim? Besides $20.

the fusion is not as deep as the deep-v but it is considerably lighter. the fusion is 19mm wide like the deep-v making it thinner than the aerohead. basically its a compromise between the strength of the deep-v and the weightsavings of the aerohead. https://velocityusa.com/rim-diagrams.php

QBP does indeed own surly and recently (last 7 or 8 years I think) bought salsa. look at the mailing address for either of them and its the bloomington MN locale from which qbp operates. surly was never anything but a qbp venture, salsa of course was. not that there's anything wrong with that, surly's are great bikes.

I stand corrected. Surly just lost a couple cool points in my mind, I always thought that they were like an IRO only with better connections and marketing.

Why doesn't Quality gain some cool points instead? Surly makes cool gear and they are given the liberty to do truly wacky projects like the Pugsley or their muni frame. Kudos to QBP for staying hands-off.

These are just "my-mind" cool points, not the overreaching kind, don't worry.

Quality maintains the same coolness for distributing cool stuff like Surly and such. But Surly seemed cooler when it was a group of folks doing dumb stuff in Minnesota with minimal business involved.

Now that I think of it, the actual operation of Surly probably isn't much different from my previous impression, but now they have a boss somewhere and aren't running around all willy nilly (or pel mel or helter skelter, as the case may be).

So, it should be a "my initial impression of Surly lost a couple cool points, then was quickly regained."

Quality's plenty cool. at least the people that work there are. or at least they were back when I was a minneapplepus scenester. lots of fixies, and they have an open house with bro-deal hookups every spring. good peeps.

the surly hub to delgado-x rim is exactly what i'm running and i've never had ANY problems. i would recommend it to anyone.
