backwards thinking
Has anyopne else noticed.
I was riding along the clearly marked seafront bike path. As usual it was full of pedestrians, so i was ambling along pretty slowly.
A woman is wandering across the path, but no danger of intersecting with me. As she reaches the non bikepath part, she sees me, panics, and steps BACKWARDS into the bike path, into my path. I slam the brakes on and jink out the way.
Why do they always step back, even if safety is forward ?.

I don't notice that they "always" step back into my path, however, I have observed that when yelling "On your left" to pedestrians, they often look over their left shoulder as their bodies seem automatically to move in that direction.

Try shouting, HEY!!! as you pass. 50/50 chance, they'll jump out of your way.

Ok, ok. j/k.
(I suspect you are leading us in a specific direction, Michael?
)
I have tried a new, introspective method: I toot my whistle gently
and repetatively as I approach. They don't get startled and the gradual increase in sound tends to register my location very well.
(I have just confessed to using a PATH!!!!
)
