Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Squirrel + spokes = ouch

I got these in an e-mail and thought I'd share. I don't have any background on this and my apologies if it has already been posted.

Funny how they didn't bother to remove it (or weren't able to) and put the bike on the rack.

It looks like a grey squirrel in its winter coat judging by the luxuriously fluffy tail.

holy moly!

Thats a big squirrel!

I remember one sunday when I was riding with my club and we were in a paceline pushing a good 27 mph, when suddenly a darn squirrel runs right into the street right in front of us. It almost caused a pile of flesh and bikes!

you guys are worse than animals

You have no sympathy for that squirrel. You kill another life and you think it's "funny"

Screw all of you...

I was riding in RI's east bay path when I lived there and I swear a squirrel or small rabbit ran right through my front Rolf Vector wheel. I sh•t you not! I was going at least 15 mph and I can't believe it didn't take me and my bike out. My wheel and fork survived for some reason. small fast beast I suppose.

You have got to be kidding ovoleg, right? If a squirrel did that to me and made me wreck my last thought would be about the poor animal. Maybe if you go faster the little bastard would not be able to get in there , but it is funny .

all you guys care about is your bikes

"Oh, it almost damaged a spoke".

You don't care about that other life that you are taking. You don't own the world, we as creatures have a duty to share it.

Why don't you guys just go in the forest and start shooting at everything you see? Maybe this annoyance will go away?

that squirrel is dead, you are alive.

You can manufacture a new bike, you cannot create life.

The thing is, you guys are selfish. It's all about YOU .

I agree that the photos are not pleasant to look at. Obviously, the squirrel was killed but why are you so upset? The squirrel wasn't killed interntionally or from neglect. It looks like a freak accident...

Yes, and it's also very cool to post about how you killed a squirrel and how much of an annoyance they are

Nobody here knows the context, and it's quite possible that the squirrel seriously injured or even killed the cyclist - that doesn't look to have been a low-speed crash, given how badly broken the fork is. Did the squirrel have a lousy day that day? Absolutely. But I bet the cyclist had a pretty lousy day that day, too, and I empathise with the rider more than with the animal.

And large predators in general are notoriously kind to squirrels? What are you on about?

Still, it's pretty sad to see a mangled dead squirrel caught in between two spokes. It's pretty tasteless too to post it here and make jokes about it.

IMO, it looks like the squirrel is too dead to care if we're cracking jokes at its expense.

not to derail this little love in for mr squirrel... but while in portland this summer i learned that earlier in the spring a road cyclist died from head trauma, as a result of this exact occurrence. hopefully the rider on the trek pictured walked away with just a story.

i'm knocking on wood.

kindness has nothing to do with any of this.

Large predators are killing the squirrel for food, they are not killing it and then laughing about it as they go on their way

Public forum, if you want to go get a rifle and kill half of our wildlife---go ahead, just don't post bragging about it and expect positive feedback

If the guy whose accident is pictured above laughed and went on his way, he was very very lucky indeed. Frankly, if you can't empathise with the guy the squirrel took out, you're a little less human and a little less humane than a lot of animals I know. Sure, the squirrel's death is sort of sad, but it's hardly the stuff of tragedy; a human death may have resulted, and that IS tragic.
