WHAT'S IN THIS ISSUE
--------------------------------------

Drugs are prevalent in sport, but so too apparently is the use of mega doses of vitamins and other drugs not on various banned lists.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported last month the results of a comprehensive study of athletes during the 2000 Summer Olympics. A synopsis of the study and a list of the results is the subject of the E-Feature Showcase. The article heading, "Reds, Vitamins C & Cocaine" is part of a line from Truckin' -- the famed Grateful Dead song.

Of course, there is the usual array of notes and quotes, product links, links to articles ESN has discovered for readers' enjoyment and the e-quote of note.

Lastly, please support our sponsors and supports and tell a friend (or two) about Endurance Sports News and its complementary newsletter, Tour de France Times.

RUNNINGMAN BONKS - AGAIN

David Blaikie, the former Reuters journalist in Canada who has diligently been producing the web site Ultramarathon World for several years, has been the most intrepid reporter on the Robert Garside beat.

Garside, for those who may not know, wants to be known as the first runner to run around the globe. But his journey has been scrutinized and he's been called a fraud more than he's been called a runner.

Through various trials and tribulations, glowing media reports, less-than-glowing media reports and wondrous exchanges, Blaikie and Garside have been jousting at a furious pace.

Blaikie always remains journalistically sound, and his latest post is no exception. It speaks volumes. Take a look at the link:

TRADE WINDS AND TRANSITION SPLITS - IT'S THE IRONMAN

The 24th edition of the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon World Champion will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, beginning at 7 a.m. in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

Since the event is nearly 25 years and since it's been 20 years since ESN first attended the race, we can't help but reminisce.

Remember Dave Scott winning in his knee-high socks? How about Julie Moss crawling across the finish line? And how come Lyn Brooks competing almost invisibly until the event realized she was about to become the first -- and still only -- 20-time finisher?

The race has come along ways since its early years as the only Ironman event. Now there are 16 events around the globe on the Ironman circuits. Sports Illustrated first gave the race its "breakthrough" coverage when it referred to the competitors as part of the "lunatic fringe."

Now, several web site provide live coverage and the event is a yearly highlight of NBC's endurance sports coverage.

Speaking of coverage, live Ironman Hawaii reports will be available on the official site: https://www.ironmanlive.com and https://www.insidetriathlon.com, among others.

By the way, the Hawaiian Ironman race also received further bad news at the top of the pro men's field last Thursday when Luc Van Lierde, the two-time race winner from Belgium withdrew with back problems.

Van Lierde, who last won the event in 1999, has the course record on 8:04:08 and the best-ever Ironman time of 727. Also withdrawing recently were top hopefuls Steve Larsen and Craig Walton.

Lastly, for a detailed looked at how a top amateur balances work, family and his athletic pursuits, check out the feature on Bruce Aldrich in the Sacramento Bee. (Oh, yeah, I wrote it.) Here's the link:

NEW SPONSOR DEAL FOR WESTERN STATES 100

As predicted in ESN #31, the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run and The North Face have agreed to a new three-year contract sponsorship agreement.

The North Face will be the race's presenting sponsor, an arrangement that will allow the event to maintain its prestigious stature. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

In conjunction with the agreement, TrailRunner Magazine has been named a "media partner" of the race.

Traditionally held on the last week of June, the Western States 100 begins at the base of squaw Squaw Valley and continues on rugged trails to Auburn, California.

For additional information, contact the race via its web site: https://www.ws100.com.

SMALL TOWN MARATHON, MIDDLE-AGE MILESTONE

It's not Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles or New York City, but so what. It's not often 56-year-old runners win marathons. Here's a link to a nice article about Bill Hawke, the winner last month of the Skagit Flats Marathon in Burlington, Washington.

E-QUOTE OF NOTE
--------------------------------------

"I had 20 years of competitive running, so now on a good week, I run 50 miles. I give myself one day when I give my legs a rest from the pounding. On that day, I will ride a bike or do the Nordic track or whatever. For me, I feel that if I want to have running as my main activity for the rest of my life, I need to take a break one day a week."

---- Grete Waitz, on her approach to non-competitive running.

--------------------------------------
DEPT. OF E-CLARIFICATION
--------------------------------------

David Clinger will be without a contract for the U.S. Postal Service Team contract for 2003, not David Zabriske as stated in Tour de France Times #27.
