Does NYC do any snow removal on bridge walkways?


Down in Philadelphia, we're on 1 month and counting on the closure of the Ben Franklin Bridge walkway, originally for snow on December 5 (!!), and now because of 'security improvements'.

These are the same idiots that brought us this past summer's closure (here's the thread about that one):

now if they only put that time in to thinking of ways to DO things, and MAke things WOrk,

Unbelievable. Imagine if they decided to just close the bridge to car traffic for a month. I think people would be a little upset. The DRPA seems to close the walkway whenever they feel it's too much trouble to maintain, without regard to the people who use it.

I'm surprised the Philly bike coalition has never spoken out against this practice. I've brought this to their attention before. They don't seem to care.

I thought we had it bad with the George Washington Bridge restrictions (long story), and the poor salting job done there (the walkway is plowed, but the surface of it is somewhat uneven so patches of ice abound, try that in Look-cleated shoes, Central Park here I come).

It's good to know that an agency (who runs the George Washington Bridge?) can clear a walkway.

Not only does the DRPA not clear the walkway, in one portion they plow snow from the roadway onto the walkway. Which makes it deeper and then takes longer to melt.

I'm curious if the bridge walkways that NYC operates get plowed/salted/anything.

Hmmm...Central Park sounds like the jam tonight...

The GWB has little guard stations at the towers but I've never, ever seen a cop walking the bridge's path (and I've been over that bridge probably hundreds of times).

I don't think I've ever seen a regular police patrol on any NYC area bridge. I have seen cops before or after 'incidents' were reported (muggings, gatherings, etc). But those things are usually short lived. Wouldn't hurt to have 1 or 2 cops patrolling the bridges on foot.

The walkway re-opened yesterday (1-17-06), 42 days after it closed.

It looked like it was closed this morning, maybe cause of the rain.

I believe it reopened when the winds died down. At least according to their web site.

The Goethals bridge is still closed but the map states it will open in 2006. Lets keep our fingers crossed.
