I've decided to carry a few extra cassettes with larger gears rather than go compact crank. I was surprised to see that the 10speed cassette needs a specific chain whip? ...Really?

When you say "carry," do you mean carry them with you on rides? Is it your intent to change cassettes when you transition from the flats to the hills, and vice-versa?

If so (and I'm not sure that's what you mean), then don't you offset any savings in pedaling efficiency by the additional weight of carrying the tool and the cassette along with you on the ride?

No. no. no. Jeez.that would look hilarious.

I mean when I travel to new places, carry an extra cassette along if the terrain is very hilly or very flat and do a quick cassette change before the ride. I'm just wondering if I really need a 10speed chain whip or if a regular chain whip will do.

I use a whip with a nine speed(Shimano) chain on it. It stays on the cogs fine and has never done any damage that I can see or a customer remarked about.
If all you use is the Campy ten you could put the leftover(new) chain from a chain replacement on your whip. Just to follow the instructions.

I use an old performance chain whip on all my cassettes Campy 10, Shimano 9 etc...

I switch out cassettes all the time on my road and cross bikes (road: record 10 and cross: veloce/centaur 10) with a regular park tool chain whip and have never had a problem. Campy reccomends their own brand of tools for all work involving campy parts... but other companies tools work too.

I need to make a dual whip with 3/32 on one side and 1/8 on the other. Save some space in the box.
