Hi Folks

I got a preview of Bicycling magazine today and while most of the information and teasers are well known on this forum one of them I couldn't figure out:

"Reduce your need to brake on descents by simply doing this-- it takes 10mph off your speed!"

I don't think they're advocating jamming your foot on the front tire... What could it be?

Chuckie

I thought downhills were for going fast and brakes were for going slow. Something isn't adding up here...

Sit up and hold the magazine open over your head to use it like a parachute.
It's about the only thing that rag is good for.

Enjoy

Oh thats easy, switch to knobby tires.

Its probably sitting up more or even standing on your pedals to increase air drag.

I'm almost 100% positive that it is splaying your legs and sitting higher up on the bike.

So let's say it is the parachute approach-- can your body slow you down that much? That's like saying a tuck will improve your speed by 10mph.

I agree, the magazine looks weak. Two days on Bike Forums will exceed a year's subscription in information. Plus this group is a whole lot funnier.

There's lots of things you can do to slow down a descent without using your brakes....

Drag your panniers along the road behind you.
Let the air out of the tires.
Kick out the tail light on the parked cars as you go by.
Bounce off pedestrians.
Find a granny on a comfort bike and just grab the rear rack.

Open up your hub, take out the bearings and soke them in degreaser. Clean the bearing races and then fill them with sand. Replace bearings and seals. Enjoy.

Seriously though, you can slalom downhill (obviously road only) to help burn off a little speed. If you've got that much of a problem with the cantis and elevation, perhaps you should install a avid BB7 road on the front axel.
