fair price to pay for shipping...
Wrenches,
What is a fair price to pay to have a bicycle packed and prepped for shipment? I am selling my Trek MTB and want to make sure I tack a fair handling fee onto the price.
I know the shipping charges will very depending on distance and carrier.
Thanks
As always, you guys rock.

Your questions a bit open ended, don't ya think?

maybe i wasn't clear.
I wasn't asking how much it costs to ship... I know... I know that's what the title says (I'm beating myself as we speak). What I meant to ask was, how much will it cost have a bike prepped for shipment.
Thanks

"Professional prep and box" is the key. Good boxes are not easy to find. Far eastern boxes are made of recycled kraft stock and tend to be very soft. US sourced kraft boxes will tend to be sterner stuff. One can argue what should be done but prep for sale and good protection would suggest blocks in both dropouts, removal and packing of the RD in bubble wrap with tape down to prevent banging, fastening the front fork to the frame so it can't rotate or bang the frame. Full frame wrap with bubble wrap or equivalent; moving the brake handles so they can't perforate the box, removal of the
chain and wrapping, pedals ditto, locking the wheels in a position so they can't rattle or move; boxing up the loose parts or even double boxing so nothing can get lost. Other precautions may occur, just some off the top of my head. PITA to do and PITA to extract bike from all the tape and bubble wrap, but generally leads to good feelings when no 'new' scratches, dents or damage attributable to shipping or packing appear. Certainly worth $40-50 to do all this and scrounge up a good box.

New Question,
What are the dimensions for an industry standard bike box? L X W X H
How much does a bike box weigh?
Man, trying to sell a frame and shipping it is a real bear.
Thanks again.

Packing by your LBS............$30-$40. Of course that is with them having labor of course in this. You can get the box from them and do it yourself if you feel competent.
