Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Newbie about to buy a Redline 925, help setting it up fixie...

Hey, I'm about to buy a new Redline 925, mostly because I like the classic look, but also the fact that it would make a good city bike for commuting. However, I've been thinking about possibly setting it up fixie - should I? I would also need some suggestions on gear ratios for someone just starting out. I'm young and athletic so I don't think I'd need anything too low. You know, a ratio that'd be good for normal transportation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

set it up fixed? just flip the wheel over, it comes with a 15T track cog.
gearing is dependent on your terrain and fitness. 42x15 stock should be fine for most places

Its a no brainer. Flip the wheel and do it. Might try riding it as a single speed for a while first, just so you can get used to the bike in general. Then, when you're comfortable on it, switch to fixed and you'll soon forget the freewheel ever existed
