From the bargain basement end of the spectrum, here is what I remember. I've done about 1000 miles this year, mostly commuting, started in earnest in late July: (already had the commuter MTB, $90 at police auction in 1996 and already had helmet and rack for the panniers)

Bikes, 1 MTB @ $100 , 1 road @ $35 $135
New front wheel, (son hit errant car) $60
Tune up for rear wheel $30
Panniers (from Value Village) $5
Rack Pack & 2 under seat bags (on sale) $30
Tires (2) & Tubes (6) $50
Bike Gloves $15
Helmet mirror & Lights $65
Air pump & some tools (already had most) $25
Fenders for commuter $30

Total $445

I'm seriously looking at a cycling jacket for $170, but that would mean a 40% budget increase!!!

Should I worry that all that's original about the bike I bought in Sept 2002 is the frame, pedals and headset, or should i just upgrade those bits too

I am a tightwad.

I don't know how much I spent this year, but I just let go of $2.11
on a new shifter cable.

The old rear cable had one thread left still intact. I discovered this while riding home in a chilly rain, using only my front derailleur.

I don't really want to know. I've been riding both road and mtb for quite a few years, and one thing I've learned to buy what I want the first time instead of cheaping out. I used to be so cheap that I would by less than what I really wanted, then either break it or get tired of it. Next time I would upgrade just a little bit. I've spent way more over the years on lesser bikes than I should have...

Well, I had a job this summer where I made 7.85 and hour, part time, and I made a toal of 2000 dollars.....I have 20 in the bank. I have been working at a bike shop for a few months now, and make approx 6 bucks an hour, and I'm in there alot. I've only seen around 200 dollars of that money.

I have spent a good bit getting set as a commuter, so I don't really mind spending the money. Actually, I don't really care about any of it. I work hard for my money, and I want to spend it on stuff that I enjoy, and that is cycling. At some point I'm going to face that fact that I need to start saving my money, because it doesn't grow on trees.

Forgetting prices, my purchases this year, to date:
1 road bike with computer, handlebar bag, pump, & Egg beater pedals,
set of 28mm tires for above bike,
BF jersey,
3 bargain basement summer jerseys & 2 bargain long sleeve winter jerseys,
2 pair of performance shorts,
A bargain basement pair of shoes,
2 pair of Duofold triathalon tights, (also bargain basement),
a bargain basement set of mini Ortlieb panniers,
A full set of Wisconsin bike trail maps,
8 pairs of wool socks,
Park shop chain tool,
2 chains,
1 derailleur cable,
1 MTB with a disc brake up-grade and new rear wheel,
Shimano M324 pedals for MTB,
New rack to accomadate disc brake on MTB,
2 new pairs of winter gloves,
new pedal wrench to replace missing one,
Large quantities of lubricants, degreasers, & polish,
about 6 inner tubes of various sizes,
3 24inch tires.
I think that is all.

Yes, I am aware that Santa does not need to stop here.
